It might have something to do with many folks hating Duke, Reddick having a big game against rival UNC, the buildup to March Madness, and there being no big sports stories in the lull between the Superbowl and March Madness (other than the NHL gambling ring that broke today).

Because people hate Duke, and star white players at Duke get the reverse-McNabb treatment, that is, people want to hate Duke players don't want to be called a racist for publicly hating a black player, so the best white player on Duke becomes the lightning rod for all their vitriol.

Sounds like the sports media drumming up controversy during a slow sports news period to me. BTW - I forgot we have the Olympics coming up, so the silliness will probably end Friday.

Actually ESPN did a piece on J.J Redick last year about the fact he was so hated for no particular reason. They documented the fact that his cell phone number was released, he received death threats, was booed at every stadium... etc. It was rather hard to comprehend where the hatred for this player came from, other than the fact that he's damn good.
