Councilman Wants To Ban Smokers From City Jobs
A Central Florida councilman wants to ban people who smoke from taking any city jobs, according to a Local 6 News report.
Councilman Richard Contreras wants to ban smokers from taking jobs at City Hall, parks and even with the police department in Melbourne, Fla.
Current workers would not lose their jobs but applicants would be asked about tobacco use and smokers would be dropped from consideration, according to the report.
The reason given for the policy is to cut on health care costs, according to the report.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said smokers ring up $1,600 more per year in medical bills than nonsmokers and they miss more days of work.
A final decision on the policy is months away, according to the report.
LOL
Lying alone usually does it.......
Fat people watch put---you're next!!
Fat people watch out---you're next!!
So - the people who eat terrible diets and booze themselves into poor health are hired?
Sorry for the spelling error.
How about banning gay men? They're more likely to test HIV positive and I understand the treatment is very expensive.
Can we ban totalitarian nanny-state smoking nazis from council positions?
So you apply for a job and they ask you "are you a smoker" you say no. 20 years later they present a photograph of you smoking 3 days before your pension is vested and fire you all because you smoked a cigarette?
Government shouldn't be allowed to do this, but non-government employers should be allowed to ban smokers.
Don't be rediculous, that would be violating their rights. :)
A gay smoker would really put these guys in a quandary.
It is quite obvious to me that Councilman Contreras is a "discriminating" man. I think people like him should be banned from public office.
Picking up garbage is apparently a highly sought after profession in Melbourne these days.
What about new daddies smoking a celebratory cigar on the occasion of their child's birth... when they would normally abstain. Is ONE incident enough to get you booted?
Time for smokers to sue!! What's taking them so long?
Yep, I have smoked for 25 years and have had a $144 bill for stitches and a $328 bill for an emergency room visit in those 25 years. Guess I need to smoke more huh?
I am sure that this so called elected official would push for your dismissal to save the taxpayers money.
I have smoked for 45 years and have not cost the taxpayers or my company one dime. Whereas my wife who doesn't smoke but is a diabetic costs them money all the time for her medication!
I get calls for health insurance and tell them that I am on the Florida Government health plan. When they sound confused, I remind them that I pay an additional $10+ per carton thanks to the Tobacco settlement rape case and that the state owes it to me to now take care of me. They usually just start babbling and I hang up. ;-)
