Vanity-- Freeper Computer Freak-Out
My office | February 5, 2006 | Me

Posted on 02/05/2006 8:30:17 AM PST by najida

The history--- My computer is a HP Pavillion with Windows XP version 2002 I did have to send it back when I first got it because the hard drive wouldn't work. So it was returned with all the software installed and running.

I can't find my windows disk, and to think of it, I don't know if I ever had one :(

What I've done so far--- Pinged myself and it appears something is blocking the sites.

Ran anti-malware Cleaned up my register Defragged my disk

Turned off the firewall (Norton, which is part of the Windows secruity suite)

However, when I go into the security suite, it says the firewall is still on (can't turn it off there).

Ran Regedit and emoved everything Norton I could from my drive-- The expired Anitvirus program and some firewall stuff.... (However, since the Windows firewall IS Norton, if I remove it, I can't get on the internet)

Deleted cookies, deleted cookies, deleted cookies....... Also emptied temp files and cleared my history.... Set my security and privacy options about 100 different ways. Made sure all SSL and TSL's were checked.

Restored my computer several times, the last as far back as October.

Called HP twice....they had me spend a small fortune on service contracts etc....to no avail. Called my LAN support guy twice (he's become a good friend :) ) Called Symantec twice....won't do that again (once the person couldn't speak English and the second time I was on hold for 45 minutes).

Made sure my date and time were correct.

Suggested, but not tried yet....

Remove the "Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" entry under "Manual Program Control."

The only tabs I have on my Firewall page are General, Exceptions, Advanced. Any other way to get there.

Call VeriSign about their protected sites.

Try a dial-up ISP server (OK, this will be a pain, but I can do it)

Clearing my hard drive (Last resort)

Pitching my computer out the window (Looking better every day)

You're not on the network. Even if you are physically connected.

PS I'd rather NOT spend anymore money, other than to just buy a new computer ;) 38 posted on 02/05/2006 11:07:27 AM MST by najida

I just learned something. Found this on HP's site:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=bph08097

I knew you could do a Restore because XP is on a protected partition, and nowadays some users can make Recovery discs.

(HP's site sucks. Things are spread everywhere, and if you bookmark things for your model it'll likely disappear, as mine did when they did a site redesign a few years back. If you find something noteworthy, better save the page).

If your hardware is fine and fast enough for your needs, then buying a new computer could be a waste of time and money. A fresh install of Windows would be easier, and get you to the same sane place. Well, same place, except that your computer will still be slower than a current one, and already be well past the midpoint of its life expectancy.

Though, buying a new computer does offer you the opportunity to throw the current one out the window, which could be very satisfying.

More seriously, whether I would buy a new computer would depend on how old and weak the hardware in the old one was. You say this is an HP Pavillion from 2002. That sounds old to me (but I'm a computer geek.) How much memory does it have, how big is the disk, and how fast is the processor?

Unless your answers to these questions suggest you got one of the biggest, baddest, fastest HP Pavillion's sold at that time, I would recommend doing what you seem inclined to do anyway - get a new computer. The increased performance will delight you.

I'd recommend checking out MonarchComputer.com's Value Desktop systems. Monarch is one of the top rated computer system vendors, according to my long time favorite rating site ResellerRatings.com.

You probably never had one; I didn't get one with my HP Pavilion...it was touted as "plug and run"; I obtained it a couple of years later after a mysterious blackout.

As to your problem, I'm the furthest thing from a computer expert, but could you r your "Security Settings" gotten changed to too high? Your problem sounds suspiciously along that line.

Dang - right over in Tucker. I used to live in Norcross, back in the late 1970's. I never realized until your post that Monarch was from down that a'way. Thanks.

I believe I paid 40 for mine a few months ago. Plus having to pay for tech support for 2 weeks just to talk to someone I couldn't understand through their heavy accent.

HP has the XP recovery installed on the computer...in files located in an unaccessible area. You are suppose to create your own recovery disk when you start your computer...but who actually does that besides the true computer geniuses?

I saw that. 10 disks? What a PITA. Another reason not to buy the mega dealers offerings. White box for me thanks.

TA DA!!!!!

WHOO HOO!!!!

Thank you all....I'm now sitting on Mozilla Firefox, checking out my bank statement (very sad) and able to log on Ebay (not good ;) )

Thank you all so very very very very much.

It was a bunch of things....updating with MS, reconfiguring my firewall, changing browsers, crying, screaming, eating pasta, digging through the recycle bin to recover something I shouldn't have pitched (oops!).... Every suggestion I got helped. I now have a better running computer, a better browser and access to secure sites.

Thanks a million!

Glad to hear it worked.

And thanks especially for letting us know how it turned out. Sometimes folks post these problems and then never get back to us. It's nice to know our efforts were useful.

Have a good day.

Go broadband.

If you already have it, try DSLreports.com, and tweak from there.
