Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Hasselbeck are Worried about Using the New Balls (Superbowl)
Fox Sports ^ | 2/05/06 | John Czarnecki

Super Bowl quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Hasselbeck are worried about using the new balls that will be used for every play in the first half of Sunday's Super Bowl XL per the NFL.

The main headache for passers is that the league never did a competent job of rubbing off the slick surface covering every football, ones they plan to donate to charity and give to the Hall of Fame and to the coaches and players in the game as souvenirs.

Unlike baseball, the league's officials have never been diligent in rubbing off the slippery surface covering every football. Big Ben will be wearing gloves due to a right thumb injury, and he believes he should be able to grip the new footballs.

"My only concern is how the receivers and guys like Jerome Bettis deal with the slippery new footballs," Roethlisberger said. "I understand the reason for putting so many footballs into play for this game, but I do know how difficult it is for my teammates to catch them."

Hasselbeck didn't know about the league's system of using a new football for every single play in the first half of the championship game.

"I don't like the new footballs, but I'm sure I will be able to deal with them," Hasselbeck said. "It's part of the deal, and every player on the field has to handle this situation. Most of the new footballs will be given to charity and that's a good thing."

I hear ya.

I was just making a semi-joke about gambling.

When I don't have a dog in the fight, I search for good betting opportunities.

There used to be a time when this was a championship game. Now it is nothing but a show with a football game in between. They are destroying this game with too much commercialism. That from an avid Steeler fan.

Here's another member of the Steeler Nation that is not happy with the NFL stupidity. Hard to believe, but the NFL is a bureaucracy, so what can you expect, I guess.

There are flags run up a flagpole on the Capitol every day so a Congressman can give them to a constituent and say it flew at the Capitol. It did for about 30 seconds.

When the President signs a bill he use 10 or 12 pens and hands them to supporters of the bill as souvenirs.

And we pay for all of them. It is a waste.

Ben worries about the team -

Most of the new footballs will be given to charity and that's a good thing."

Matt thinks politically correct thoughts.

Now, whose head is more in the right place?

Oh no you don't. I've had to suffer through nail biting Patriot SB wins (though last year was less stressful thanks to Andy "let's take our time" Reid) so if Pittsburgh is to prevail I want it to go down to the last play. Perhaps the first overtime in SB history.

LOL

No overtimes until the NFL changes that totally unfair half-*ssed format. The NCAA format is better.

I hear you. If they would just leave the balls alone, I could deal with the rest of the bull.

He's a bit of a dweeb that way!

I saw an interview of him last night where he was standing in front of one of those big microphones and a little spider was crawling on it. He killed it then said glibly to the reporters, "I hope that didn't offend any PETA people".

You sure can tell where that kid comes from.

Steelers by 10!

THe local Fox affiliate is covering the SB and has a few reporters in Detroit. Across the board, they said there was one thing they couldn't find: Seahawks fans.

The NFL owners seem to really hate that format. Why not make the offenses start at their own 45 instead of the 25?

These teams are relatively even.

The game is going to come down to a "couple lucky breaks"

Sorry. NO one in this game is clearly superior to the other. both have to deal with the "slick" balls. They have to deal with the same referees, the same chain gangs, everything.

It's going to come down to who gets "lucky"

Or the team that creates their own luck.

As long as both teams get the same treatment - however stupid - is OK.

Now let's shut up, line up and get the game going!!

yeah....exactly.

Whichever teams adjusts, adapts and overcomes will win. Simple enough.
