dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | February 03, 2006 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

sang-froid, also sangfroid \sang-FRWAH\, noun
Freedom from agitation or excitement of mind; coolness in trying circumstances; calmness.

Example sentences:

Both men were mightily impressed by the calmness of the Americans on board, particularly among the women. "I had, during my sojourn in America," Beaumont said later, "a thousand occasions to see the sang-froid of the American."
--Michael Kammen, "Wrecked on the Fourth of July," New York Times, July 6, 1997

Gaviria knew Alberto as an impulsive but cordial man capable of maintaining his sangfroid under the most stressful circumstances.
--Gabriel Garcia Marquez, News of a Kidnapping

Etymology: Sang-froid is from the French; it literally means "cold blood" (sang, "blood" + froid, "cold").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Thank you--but it's not a good thing. We're a little slack in construction right now...next week is busy though.

Oh no, do you really think we have no sense of humor? You would have to bash our children to annoy us, and then we would just dispose of your body and continue on with our day. Other than that, we are all pretty easy going..... ;^)

When in Davos, or at some other spa
Monsieur Kerry tries to show his sang-froid
But attempts to look cool
Make him look like a fool
With a bad case of je ne sais quoi

Hi, secret:

After the Terrible Tuesday of Republican sang~froid
The Left reminds me very much of the Oogle~Boid
Of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame

Who laid eggs with predictions all wrong
Without the aid of tin foil or a bong
The Left is Jonesing for something.
Anything that will ruin the Red State Game

Scandals aren't working, though they keep lurking
From Michael Steele's dumpster to notes from Trent Lott
Though it looks like Harry Reid just might get kicked in the Gazotts

Here's a Memo to Harry and Howie
Stop taking advice Soros's Moon Bats toking Maui Wow-ie
Stick a fork in John Kerry as quick as you can
Though you won't and you'll be stuck with "A Plan"

Jack Deth~ 02/03/06.
