At first, Joey Porter pledged not to speak with reporters after Super Bowl XL Media Day.
Then, he softened his stance and promised to keep his outspoken mouth in check.
Wednesday, he took that plan and threw it to the ground like a defenseless quarterback.
The Steelers' loquacious linebacker couldn't contain himself yesterday when he learned Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens predicted Jerome Bettis' return to Detroit would culminate with a Super Bowl loss.
"I've been asleep all week, but now, I got woke up," Porter said yesterday. "I've got my first taste of blood, and now I'm thirsty for more. Until now, it was, 'Watch what I say. I can't say this. I can't say that. Don't do anything silly.'
"I'm ready now."
The Super Bowl had been controversy-free until Stevens livened it up with a quote that was published yesterday in Seattle newspapers.
"It's a heartwarming story and all that," Stevens said, referring to Bettis' homecoming and impending retirement, "but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy."
Porter can appreciate some spirited trash-talking, but evidently, not from someone with Stevens' modest credentials.
A 6-foot-7 former first-round pick now playing in his fourth season, Stevens had a career-best 45 catches for 554 yards and five touchdowns this season. By comparison, Steelers rookie tight end Heath Miller posted comparable numbers, besting Stevens by one touchdown.
"I feel like (Stevens), out of anybody, should know his role," Porter said. "I mean, he hasn't done anything to make anybody fear him. Jerome is a walking Hall-of-Fame guy that everybody knows about. This guy (Stevens) was almost a first-round bust, who barely made some plays this year.
I'm going to make sure he doesn't have anything to do with the outcome of the game."

What: The Super Bowl Party

Anyone in the area. I have reserved bar stools. Pitchers..$5, 12 shrimp..$5, large pizza..$5, the game on 27 TV's.
Warning, we are big mouth Steeler fans.
Come one, come all.
I am worried enough about that news to change my prediction. I am betting on a close Seahawks victory.
It is very important for the Steelers to be able to run well, because Seattle has a great secondary. Whatever happens, this is going to be a great game.
And they won't pay me a penny for having this idea right now.

LMAO!!
Ditto for me except with Troy Aikman, Troy Aikman and Troy Aikman! I know, not good cause I am a Steeler fan, but as a Steeler fan, I reserve the right to say, "tough ya jagoffs, he's fine!"
Ooooh. Good one!
Some of the folks here on FR were appalled at the woman who chose to have her baby delivered before the Super Bowl so she wouldn't miss it. Seems like a rational decision to me.

Every last one of you! I figured this out as I got older and watched all the old NFL Films of the Steelers superbowl years. You all are unique in your devotion. I'm a Redskins fan but this weekend, I'll be rooting for you guys.
Yep. I wouldn't have been surprised.
Mmm. Jessical Biel and Kate Beckinsale. I like it.
As long as Marvell Smith is healthy (and he is) our offensive line will be just fine. Heath Miller is no slouch, either!
Well...come down to Dallas and buy your next vehicle at Troy Aikman Ford...make it a condition of getting the vehicle that you get to meet the owner of the dealership. :-)
Okay. You've convinced me.
I'll add her to my harem. :-)
I hope they take Stevens off the field on a stretcher with a career-ender.Niiiiiice sentiment there. Does anyone know what Stevens actually said that was so patently offensive?
I believe it was, when asked about the Jerome Bettis coming home to Detriot story (has anyone heard that one yet?), something to the effect of "It's a neat story, too bad he won't get his ring."
Wow...how incredibly offensive. What gall to actually think that his team is capable of winning the game against the mighty Steelers.
He didn't say "We are going to push them around the field like ragdolls" or "I predict I will catch two touchdown passes on Sunday" or even the old reliable "I guarantee a win". He just made a snide remark to a stupid question regarding a very overhyped story.
Perhaps he should have raised a white flag and said that Jerome deserves his ring and he had chosen not to play on Sunday because he didn't want to interfere with Bettis' homecoming.
Give me a break.
He said "when." He should have said "if." Out of that, Super Controversy arises.
The idea that he should be injured for that is abhorrent. Merely being humiliated is enough.

I could be wrong on this, but I think I read that Keith Miller is one of the players mentioned to take the place of Krieder if he can't play. This news is too absurd to me!
OR ........ this all sounds like a great decoy by the Stiller organization and coaches.................. OR..............can you imagine Miller, setting up to block, then coming out of the backfield catching a few screen passes and rambling for about 35 yards at a clip!?
Yoi!!!!!
I'm so confused.
This does smell like Karl Rove disinfo!
;-)
That's way out of line and wrong.
But, do you remember this???
****
Fred "The Hammer" Williamson.
The Hammer said he was going to do some damage against the Green Bay Packers in the first Super Bowl. Williamson was going to drop the Hammer on the Packers. It was a bold claim. Trash talking hadn't yet been recognized as an Olympic sport, and just about everyone knew the Packers were going to toy with the Kansas City Chiefs, champions of the upstart American Football League. Most folks laughed off Williamson's boast.
And then the Hammer was knocked out cold in the second half of the Packers' rout. The Hammer went down after running into Donnie Anderson, and by the time he came to his senses, Vince Lombardi and friends were toasting their 35-10 victory.

That was a great football moment, but to be totally honest, Fred Williamson was a very nice guy!
