After the confirmation of Samuel Alito, I heard Fox New Channel's Reporter Megan Kendall when asked who might be next to retire from the bench said, "Justice Stevens has stated in the past that he was confirmed under a Republican President wants to retire under a Republican President."
I meant Ginsburg and Bryer, not Souter.
Souter is liberal too, but not as liberal as Ginsburg, Bryer or Stephens.
Right now, we have 4 conservatives in Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia, one moderate in Kennedy, and 4 Liberals in Souter, Ginsburg, Stephens and Bryer.
There is some speculation, that Souter might swing toward the right in coming years though, because part of what reportedly drove him to the left was Rhenquist, whom he apparently despised.
We can always hope.
Sorry.try this..type "Stevens" and "Kendall" into SEARCH..find ALL words..it will pop up for you...let me know what you think
Ah yes, I remember it well. We local conservatives were all thrilled to death that the president appointed a CONSERVATIVE.
Such was the thing a dream was made of at the time.

Thanks.
It's somewhat encouraging, but it was a Freeper saying he heard a Fox reporter say that Stevens has said...
Not nearly as convincing as a quote in print, but still more encouraging than what I previously felt to be the case.
'what say you now?"
I say Thank you for the effort. I was hoping to find an actual quote from Justice Stevens on the record...somewhere. I have spent a lot of time searching various sources and found nothing reliable, which leads me to think it is a wishful thinking rumor, run amuck.
Thanks anyway.
Here ya go, my friend...
It may be simply that Stevens is lying too. Didn't he tell Gerald R. Ford, Jr., that he was a "strict constructionist"? Now though the openly liberal Ford has lauded Stevens as one of his greatest achievements!
Ford never asked him that question.
I understand that it was fellow Chicagoan Edward Levi who put forth Stevens' nomination to Ford. Ford just didn't want to know about Stevens' views probably, or Ford was always a liberal from the start but withheld his true philosophy because of his more conservative constituents in Grand Rapids.
