LOS ANGELES It may have "Crashed" at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but "Brokeback Mountain" is back in the saddle as the lead contender for Tuesday morning's Academy Award nominations.
"Brokeback Mountain," the story of two cowboys in love, has dominated earlier Hollywood honors, earning best dramatic film and three other prizes at the Golden Globes and winning top awards from key critics groups.
However, at Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards, the ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off an upset win over "Brokeback" for the overall cast award.
But experts believe the film is still positioned to become the first gay-themed movie to win the best picture Oscar, while "Brokeback Mountain" filmmaker Ang Lee is a frontrunner for best director. Lee won the best director prize on Saturday from the Directors Guild of America.
"Once people saw the film, they understood that it was a film about a kind of epic greatness that can exist in anyone, anywhere, no matter who they are, no matter what their sexual orientation or class or historical circumstances," said "Brokeback" producer James Schamus.
For his performance as a married cowboy fighting his sexuality in "Brokeback," Heath Ledger has a virtual lock on a best actor nomination, though he faces serious competition from Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won the Golden Globe for lead actor in a drama as gay author Truman Capote in "Capote" and the Screen Actors Guild award for lead actor.

And the marginalization of Hollywierd continues.
Agree. The Academy Awards is HowlingWeird patting themselves on the back, this time for a great homo-promo propaganda movie. I'm not sure if I could be less impressed with an Academy Award, or nomination. I had high hopes when LOTR swept the Academies, but that was probably too much for them, and they have to swing back to the dark side.
You broke my back in the mountains?
Actually this one is more of a shove it up the .............. well you get the picture.
Ah, the "Film Actors' Guild".
I wish there were more "Team America" movies.
I'll watch anything to get out of a meeting... Whoa! Mia looks hot!
Well, we should have a gay ole time, eh?
"Now we don our gay apparel..."
I already have been watching which movies and stars I will squander my 'so called' ill gotten gain on......all this is going to do is cause Hollywood to loose another 7% or more on the 2006 bottom-line.
Keep it up Hollywood! Your going to make yourselves extinct......because I refuse to support your politics- movie or personal - with my money. Sooner or later we're going to do to Hollywood what talk radio did to the liberal media.
The best Hollywood liberal is a POOR Hollywood liberal.
As the guy on Fox and Friends just said, It's a great day in Hollywood to be gay and a terrorist.
What's an "Oscar"?
after watche the fox and friends summary,
hollyweird is determined to make the oscars a political speech about homosexuals.
So these are the "butsex oscars."
So we have homosexuals, communists, and terrorists as heros.
The oscars might as well be moved to a "gay" pride parade.
"How come I have never seen the Oscars?"
Because people don't watch it and it's not on TV anymore.
"Why?"
Well Johnny, because the Oscars used to be about entertaining people.....but then they started to be more like the news and started to yell at the rest of the people about stuff that we didn't think was right.
"Ohhhhhh...... That's okay Daddie, I don't like it when someone yells at me either."
The Oscar's have become nothing more than Hollywood giving the finger to middle America.
Take the 'gay love' aspect out of the movie and you have a marginally better shot version of Deliverance substituting sheep for Dueling Banjos. Rather one dimensional and taudry. A new low unless someone is working on a lesbian version of The Graduate.
......leading the pack-ers..........
B-A-A-A-A-A-A!..........
Talk about pushing this on middle America! I know of at least one case around here where a 53 year old man took his 11 year old grandson to this movie when he didn't know what this movie was about first.
I knew this was going to happen around here and sure enough...it did.
P.S. I noticed you're from Mississippi......hope all is going well with you and the recovery. Living in Ohio means only having to endure the cold and dodge a tornado every now and then.
Interesting, and hypocritical, I think that most of these actors and actresses cam from middle America. Middle America supported them in their struggling days by watching their television programs and movies and paying to make them famous actors and actresses. Now they flip the bird to middle America.
Solution: Don't pay to see them and don't watch their performances........ They will go away, trust me.
I guess Im not all that sophisticated because I find most award winners to be pointless and downright boring. Unforgiven, Lost in Translation, Beautiful Mind all sleepers. Im sorry I cant think of more examples, but I dont take mental note of award contenders because I find terribly uninteresting.
When I am unfortunate to watch Academy fare, my conclusion is that the award had nothing to do with the quality of the film itself. Its almost like giving the Nobel Peace prize to Arafat. He didnt deserve it, but lets give it to him anyways to make him feel included.
Just because a movie challenges social norms is not enough in itself to be good movie. Stretching the sensibilities of an audience is already done by the increasingly grotesque horror flick trend, but you dont see anyone nominating Hostel.
I could be wrong, but I would suspect that a good number of conservatives use the internet to guide them to good and suitable movies. There are plenty of Christian movie review sites, and of course sites like this, that can be visited, to spare families the cost and agony of wasting precious money and time.
