Work at Home Opportunities
self

Posted on 01/30/2006 9:59:26 AM PST by hsmomx3

I am curious to know if any of you have ever done data entry work from your home processing rebates, etc.

If you have done this, how is the pay? I thought this might be a good way to have some part time work and be at home with the kids.

Thanks!!

If they ask you for any money... don't go for it!

Much of what I've read about these things indicate that they're lousy deals or outright scams. But I have no first-hand experience,so I could be wrong.

One of the best jobs to work from home is medical transcriptionist, but you need higher education (tech college) for that.

I knew one person who thought about trying the rebate thing. It turned out to be just another scam. There's always ebay, medical transcription - though a lot of places want you to have been through a certified course.

If it's a real job opportunity, they won't ask you to pay for more information.

Yah, I tried this. Ha.

I went to an orientation on this kind of thing and decided to take some home to test it, as they allowed you to do that to try it out first and see if it's what you want to do. At least with this company, you got paid per rebate you processed, like $.10 or something per rebate.

I thought it would be easy and not take too much time to data enter peoples names and addresses, and I thought wow, $.50 per rebate, I could make a lot, but I was wrong.

First, you had to spend time checking all the necessary stuff was there to qualify the person for the rebate (and you aren't getting paid for this part).

Once you start entering, it is pretty simple, but isn't as quick as you might think.

It took me 8 hours (and I type 65 wpm) to enter 200 rebates. Needless to say, I didn't make nearly enough to cover the hours I put into it. Not to mention that I had to drive pretty far to get the papers to data enter, so my "commuting" were not covered either.

I found, in my experience, that it wasn't worth the time. But each company could be different. Just check it out first, go to an orientation of you can, and also, as someone else said, if you have to pay any $$ up front, it's a scam.

The biggest problem with those kinds of work is most of the things you can do "from home" can be done by some guy in India for a lot less, so be careful what you choose...

Thanks!!

I guess the company is legit

But, I wish they would tell you upfront how much they pay.

It is about 30 miles one way from my home which is why I am hesitant. No $$ is required to do this.

I know a lady that works for a local, small airline and data enters ticket info. She makes a decent living. I think she is paid by quantity.
Dr. Laura has some warnings about scams.
She also links to: bizymoms an online work resource for stay-at-home moms.

Just like the "make thousands a month stuffing envelopes" scams...the only way you would be able to make a living is if you somehow can move your hands 20 times faster than a normal human being...

Actually, a friend of my husbands does this "stuffing envelopes" and says he makes about $500 a week and the stuffing doesn't take as long as you'd think....

I guess it's for those that like papercuts... :)

Well, I couldn't live on it alone, but an extra $500 a week ain't too shabby!

For what it is worth, there is also a website called WAHM.com -- The Online Magazine for Work-at-Home Moms.
