I assume most conservatives have not nor will see Brokeback Mountain. Same here, but there was a clip on Jay Leno last night that was utterly despicable. Not because of anything sexual, but for the way Heath Ledger (one of the two male leads) tried as hard as he could to imitate President Bush's facial expressions.
If you have seen the film or the clip, I'm referring to the campfire scene. I have no idea where it is in the film or how many other 'campfire scenes' there are, but I'm guessing through context that this scene occurred after the two had their first 'encounter' and when they were saying their goodbyes. And you can almost see President Bush's face emerge from under the cowboy hat.
The Ledger character is trying to act as macho as possible thus the message the film is sending (and I have NO DOUBT it was deliberate on Ang Lee's etc part) is -
That gay man trying to stay closeted by acting like a macho cowboy sure looks an awful lot like President Bush!
I'm not unaware that Hollywood routinely uses their product to propagandize with subtleties like this, but I found this instance particularly deplorable.
Heath Ledger obviously looks nothing like President Bush so, in a perverse way, I have to give him props for his professional mimicry. I'm sure everybody associated with the film will lie and deny, but if you watch that scene (and for all I know there may be others) you'll recognize all the prompts - the squint, the half grimace, the way he holds his head, as proof positive that they thought it would be clever to channel the President in their gay cowboy movie.
And if that's not enough for them to bestow upon it an Academy Award...I don't know what is.
Laugh if you want. All I say is see the clip and judge for yourself.
But Jay Leno usually plays fair. He rags everybody equally. I think he is merely trying to be funny, not make a political statement.
Make people laugh. That's his job.
"They made a gay cowboy movie?" That's not news.
That one of the leads tried to channel the physical tics of President Bush into his character shouldn't be news either. If you understand Hollywood.
Actually, they are not cowboys, they are sheepherders.
"Actually, they are not cowboys, they are sheepherders."
I stand corrected. But when Heath was mimicing PRESIDENT Bush, he was doing a cowboy schtick.
Very funny.
I guess no one takes this very seriously.
I agree it's not the most important thing in the world but personally, I think it's so typical of liberal Hollywood treachery.
