Vanity - Do You Remember This?
Email from Friend

Posted on 01/24/2006 4:20:21 PM PST by Shaun_MD

I very rarely post on Free Republic but I had to share this with all of you who have not seen it. I just received this in an email a few minutes ago:

At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan administration. It was 1987. There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning. He was being drilled by a US Senator.

"Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"

Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?"

"No, sir," continued Ollie.

"No? And why not?" the senator asked.

"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."

"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.

"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.

"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"

"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.

"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered.

"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.

"Well, sir, if it were up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."

The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip. That US Senator was Al Gore.

Also:

Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners."

However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released.

Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified. It was censored in the US from all later reports.

The man in question, I believe was Abu Nidal. Osama bin Laden was not even on our radar at the time of these hearings.

No, it was Abu Nidal. This internet version of it has been around for a good while.

Osama bin Laden and Oliver North Email Hoax

Type: Urban Legend

Description:

This email hoax sounds like a small piece of history trivia but is actually an attempt to rewrite history. It claims that way back 1987, at an Iran-Contra hearing, Col. Oliver North specifically mentioned that the infamous Osama bin Laden threatened him and his family.

Trend Micro advises recipients to disregard the contents of the email, and not forward it to other users.

Does Anyone remember this?

Turns out that, according to Snopes, the Atta story is false as well.

It wasn't OBL, it was the guy in Iraq that sadam had killed a few weeks before we got there.

What about Atta being detained and released?

If you had bothered to go to the link that MNJohnnie so kindly provided in response number 4, you would have read, "In mid-2002, the "Oliver North warned us about Osama" falsity was twinned in e-mail with another wildly popular Internet muddling, the "We freed Mohammed Atta" claim. Like its North counterpart, the Atta story was largely false. "

If your friend claims to have seen this at UNC recently (the UNC rumor now being 5 years old), then you have gained the valuable information that your friend is an untrustworthy liar.

Apologies, I had posted my question before I had seen post #4. As for my friend I believe she received the same email I did. Like I said previously I never followed the Iran Contra hearings so I did not know whether it was true or not.

The truth is almost as amazing. The real Terrorist mentioned was Abu Nidal. The very same evil scumbag that tossed a wheelchair bound fellow into the sea . He actually took part in training Mohammad Atta in Iraq a few weeks before 911. He was murdered shortly before the US invasion so that little bit of Info would not come out. (It did anyway thanks to a memo written to Saddam from an Iraqi intelligence officer that was discovered by British agents)
