MARRIAGE is the death of hope," Woody Allen once said. But not for everyone. In New York, where eligible men are few and far between, single women who endure long stretches of unwilled celibacy may resort to cheating with someone else's husband because it seems like the only hope - consequences be damned.
In December, I slept with a married man - late 50s, attractive, smart and successful. He's been with his wife forever, a lifestyle to which he is completely wedded, one that I had no intention of jeopardizing. Any guilt I might have felt was further assuaged by the fact that the man already had a roguish reputation. Since it had been two months that I'd gone without any skin-to-skin contact and I was too impatient to go through another round of dating rigmarole - the dinners, the chitchat, the sizing each other up - I reached out to him.
It was mid-afternoon when we met for a late lunch at a forgettable sushi place near 42nd Street. Since we weren't on a traditional "date," there was no need to conceal our vulnerabilities in order to make a good first impression. I was relaxed, and enjoyed being open with and appreciated by a man without even having to try.
Afterward, he put his arm around me and steered me to West 45th Street to Hotel QT, a sense of furtiveness lending a sexy dangerousness to our imminent entwinement. Entering the room, we anxiously pulled off our clothes, tearing back the bedcovers.
Last spring, a Time-CNN poll determined that while 90 percent of Americans say adultery is wrong, some type of infidelity occurs within half of all marriages. The reasons why seem obvious enough: boredom, loneliness, anger and, in cases when bedroom activities have simply died out,

For your body.
I like innies, not outies.
I was just humoring you cuz you seemed so sad.
He only can offer a baby dill...
Just cause I look like Joe Friday doesn't mean I'm not happy as a clam.
My theory is evolutionarily hardwired Bayesian analysis. If a man is a quality mate, he's more likely to be in a relationship. Thus in the absence of any other information, a man in a relationship is more likely to be of high quality. Women apply this reasoning unconsciously and find themselves more attracted to involved men.
Half of all marriages end in divorce. But some people get married and stay married, they constitue over half the married population at any moment. The same minority who have multiple marriages probably stain those same marriages with adultery. I suspect that adultery is relatively less common in long term stale marriages.
I think adultery is a sign that you don't take your marriage very seriously.
Married men, something the women can't readily have. Often women want what they cannot have, solely because they cannot have it. Married or 'taken' men often exude a degree of confidence, lacking in a hardup single.
Women often get caught up in the "Sex in the City" attitude....a show written by gay men. Some real-life women try to duplicate the lives of "Carrie & Samantha", but are left emotional and financial wrecks. Real-life men do not want to date them.
"Women often get caught up in the "Sex in the City" attitude...."
And enough with the d@mned "Cosmos" already. If I see one more middle aged housefrau drinking that swill, I'll scream.
Sounds like just the kind of gal that would probably take you up on your invitation. I don't think it mattered much to her as long as she didn't have to go through the "rigmarole" of dating.
This girl is a pig. The husband worse.
You are exactly right. NO woman could get a married man into the sack, if HE said "NO!" There is NO excuse. It speaks volumes to his lack of character. She is definitely NOT exonerated. She is a very low class woman with NO morals.
Shiksas? It's only non-Jewish women who come on to you?
I'm not even jewish, Shiksa just sounds funnier.
If that had been the case, she would have put in enough clues to identify him. ;)
I remember a Seinfeld episode about that. George Costanza finally started wearing a wedding ring just to have a chance with females. :)
BS!
Sorry, but I have no problem believing that number. I'd like it not to be so...
MM
Maybe this is supposed to be titillating, but I'm wondering if the bedcovers had bedbugs in them, since reading a story about the bedbug problem in NYC. Got to admit I'm hoping the bedcovers were full of them! lol.
LOL, as long as you aren't married...
I think that number is a bit high, i remember a few months back medved did a thing on his program where he dissected the divorce rate. The fact that people who stay married get taken out of the statistics at some point makes it higher than it actually is. I beleive he said divorce rate is closer to 30%.
