Police: Shooter Was Protecting Himself

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man fatally shot a man in the groin to protect himself from attack at a west-side home Wednesday night, the Marion County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities said Aaron Sterling, 44, shot Jeffrey B. Randle at a residence in the 7600 block of Marabou Mills Way at about 11 p.m.

Someone called police about the shooting, and Randle, 44, of Indianapolis, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they believe Sterling was justified in shooting Randle, who investigators believe was threatening and charging at Sterling.

Authorities said that shortly before the shooting, Randle had knocked on the door of the residence, which is occupied by a woman who had a restraining order against him.

The woman told police that when Randle arrived, he was very angry, and eventually he noticed that Sterling was inside. The woman and Sterling told police that Randle shoved the door open, knocked the woman to the ground, and threatened to hurt Sterling.

Sterling shot Randle when Randle charged at him, the woman and Sterling told police.

The police will, of course, study the problem intently. After all, you have a woman and her boyfriend saying they had to shoot her estranged husband (or boyfriend) because he "charged".

I'd like to know if he used a weapon, or threatened to "whuth" the guy.

Best way to handle abuse is to make sure that you have something real, rather than some stupid restraining order that tends to represent feel goodism in the judicial system.

Read it again. He was inside a house that the restraining order forbade him to enter. He knocked the woman down. This is the discription of a violent person, and he was actively seeking out a confrontation. He got more than he reckoned on, but there it is, the world doesn't often follow the script you have written for it.

We have only the word of the woman and her "friend" that he "knocked her down".

Give CSI 15 minutes and they'll discover he was shot elsewhere (in the same place) and carried into the home in a large plastic bag (casually discarded behind the snow blower in the attached garage.

We should not be too quick to believe any of the living in this one.
