The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Anything less than 30 is inhumane.

I know, I know....I'm in big trouble, aren't I?

We only get about a week of this super cold at a time... once or twice a winter. So it's a shock to all our systems when it happens. :~D

Really? Whew!

Although, I still believe with all my heart that my first winter up there will be the one year where all records for cold will be broken.

Just because my life seems to always work that way.

Trial by fire, baby. Feel free to blame ~me~ when it happens. :-P

Although, I can guarantee I won't bring any hurricanes with me! So there's that!

Except for the part about no ice... :-)

I think ice fishing up here means we go fishing, and we just *don't* need ice to keep the beer cold.

I've been googling around and haven't found it yet, but somewhere there's an old photo of Gig Harbor frozen completely over. People out walking on the ice. Maybe back in the 1920's.

It basically never happens, but it would sure be neat to see. It's got to be really cold for a really long time before the Sound starts to get any ice in it.

I simply cannot imagine that.

I've been looking for the picture too, without success.

I still believe with all my heart that my first winter up there will be the one year where all records for cold will be broken.

That's what happened the first year OB and I were married and I moved to Overgaard, Arizona. I had never seen that much snow in my life!! I kept shoveling the walk and it kept snowing and never melting. I had a path to the front door with snow at least 3 feet high on either side. We left shortly thereafter and went to Texas. :-) LSA

Well... took a little detour on the Internet, and got lost reading some really neat stuff written by the great John Muir, about his travels in the Northwest and Alaska in 1879:

It's really a nice read.

Thanks for the segway - I'm reading "The Golden Spruce" by John Vaillant; true story about Grant Hadwin the fella that cut down the Golden Spruce. It's well written, full of NW Coast Lore, Legend and Antecdotes. Probably some of your old Coast Guard stomping grounds, Queen Charlotte Islands and Sound. Quite a tale, LSA read it first and highly recommends it.

Haven't done the hot tub thing in the snow, but on a really chilly night it's just wonderful! You just have to have a nice warm robe to hop into as soon as you get out!

Oh, it will be too hot for the girls. You can tell them that, anyway. ;o) Actually I don't like it when it's TOO hot; I can't stay in it for very long, and anyway, it's not that healty.
