The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Is this the route you're planning to take?

Yep! Should be a pretty drive - lots of national forest. The downside to that is that there are a lot of stretches of nothing.

I think I have it figured...thing I'll likely stop in Ogden, UT the first night and Pendleton, OR the second. It makes the second day a bit long, but not horribly so, and should get me in by early afternoon at the lastest on Tuesday.

I still hafta run to the library in the next coupla days to print off my cheat sheets! Hopefully I can get away without having a navigator...Margaret did a great job of that!

Tam's awful smart, but not *that* smart.

Just cuz it says forest doesn't mean there are trees ;~D

I remember most of S Idaho and all of Eastern OR to be brown high desert sage.

Aw...don't spoil my anticipation!

Though...high desert isn't really something I've seen, either. So it should be interesting just the same! And interesting to see how the terrain changes as I approach the coast!

In any case, I suspect it'll be more interesting than, say, Iowa and Nebraska were...

Well, then...it's a good thing I only have to drive through about eight hundred miles of it...give or take a couple hundred miles or so.

It's variable... and it is interesting. It'll start out brown hills, and become brown but flatter. You will go through some high pine areas in Idaho too, I think, unless you're too far south there.

It was interesting from Madras to Mt. Hood.

The view was acutally better than that...You could see from Mt Hood at one end to Three Sisters at the other. This was taken from the test site in Madras.

Isn't it nice to know you're valuable? Sometimes I wonder if anyone would notice if I didn't show up one day.
