The poodle pranced to the top of the list of Manhattan's most popular dog breeds in 2005.
The poodle edged out the Labrador retriever and dachshund, the American Kennel Club said Tuesday.
Manhattan's standard, miniature and toy poodles snatched No. 1 from the borough's dachshunds, which slid to third from 2004's top spot. The Labrador retriever was ranked No. 2, according to the kennel club, which based the rankings on its national registration statistics broken down by ZIP code.
Next in popularity were the Yorkshire terrier, golden retriever, bulldog, French bulldog, Shih Tzu and Havanese. The 10th spot was shared by the Maltese and the pug.
New to the list for 2005 were the French bulldog and the Havanese, the kennel club said.
"These breeds appeal to sophisticated people who, while they may not have a lot of space in their Manhattan apartment, have plenty of love for a petite canine companion," kennel club spokeswoman Gail Miller said in a news release announcing the rankings.
The American Kennel Club, which was established in 1884, says it aims to advance the study, breeding and exhibition of purebred dogs.
I sold a spinone puppy years ago to a couple in Greenwich Village. They lived in a loft (I actually got to go visit them one time). The dog seemed quite happy, got walked more often than most dogs (people with back yards frequently don't walk their dogs) and got to go to "the country" with the family for weekends. I think it was the life of Riely. Plus, they were photographers and one day I was looking at a dog catalogue, and recognised the face of one of the models. I called them and sure enough, it was the puppy I had sold them. Kinda cool....

I hate to be breedist, but I've never met a border collie I think I could live with. Lots of OCD in that breed too. Too bad because they are very smart and I think they're really good looking dogs.

I am very much a breedist. ;-) I LOVE GS, like Collies and Shelties much (to look at anyway), others are far below though I like many, and a few I really don't like, period (they shall remain nameless because I'd PO alot of people).
My aunt loves Borders and has had them (including breeding) for some 20 years now. They're not bad, but they (the 1s who actually truly look like BCs you expect, not those she's had that seem more built like other "Border people don't care about looks" which I think is largely nonsense) mostly just seem too tense. Not INtense, just tense. Like they're "on the edge" alot. They can't relax, it seems.
Thanks! He's a big sweetheart.
Very intelligent dogs
However I would not give 'em a "poodle cut"
I am sorry I know it has a purpose but it just looks so dumb, especially on a male
Funny, my GS loves Frisbee and is quite good at it (when she bothers to KEEP HER EYE ON THE FRISBEE!). Sometimes she does amazing things to catch it! Maybe it's a Herding Dog thing.
When she was a baby she was a total wimp (she is basically a bad wimpy GS), but things like balls and frisbees she knew she wanted to try, just was afraid at 1st to see them coming at her. So she'd be passive and let it land then go pick it up. Eventually she grew to understand she can catch them and nothing bad will happen. Now she's a linebacker and gets broken lips from *blocking* (if she can't catch, she'll block) heavy kicked balls.
1 thing that really helped w/HER was having good balls and frisbees. 2 years ago I stumbled upon DOGOBIE. They are WONDERFUL frisbees made for dogs - soft rubber and really flat except edge rims. That really emboldened Tara. So now she'll go for any flying disk w/o fear. You should try Dogobie (by Aerobie); it's great for introducing dogs timid about hard flying things.
The sporting clip is just fine. The whole body has a trimmed coat w/just the feet and tail exposed, w/a couple joint and tail-tip tufts on them.
Yeah, maybe they drink too much coffee! I have had alot of friends thru the years with border collies, who just love them. I think I'm too lazy.....

If I had a Standard Poodle that's the cut I would have for her/him
Real men own pure bred "Curb Setters"
Mine is a "Carolina Curb Setter"
They're good dogs, but they make me feel unnerved, just being tensed up and all! (You can see it in their muscles and their posture, too - they really look like cats on the hunt!)
Nice teeth
They do, in fact look like cats when they hunker down. It's pretty cool to watch them herd sheep tho.

THAT'S a real dog. Well, I think it's a GS. He's a bit large-bear-faced (which may mean Euro-show), but the marking is right. Otherwise an Akita. Good enough. ;-)
I did and she is a joy and a delight.
I saw those Dogobies at the vendors section at a show earlier this year. I should of grabbed a couple then. Would be an easy thing for the min-pin to handle although I don't think there is anything he's afraid of...seriously...except for cold rain 8>)
I got one too.
(isn't that neat? I set it up to send to her breeder. She posed proudly and never budged.)
WOW!
I mean,
WOW!
OK, the closest my dogs get to a picture like that is when I catch them playing in the laundry basket.
Makes Logan look like a piker in his awards picture
Course, he was a piker. I entered him 10 times for every green qualifying ribbon he earned. ;~D He was either stellar or embarrassing, never in between. :~D
