Yeah, making almost 1/3 of its budget back in one week's gross? That's some probably financial loser.
It's already made back more than it's budget, and will probably soon be in profit, depending on the theaters' cut, which is probably less than 30% of the take.
They probably had 15 mil in Handiwipes overhead alone.
Very limited release. They are tightly controlling the release. It will make some money -- but it is at the end of its run (both puns intended).
Its target audience have all gone to see it, they will keep it limited to gay-friendly areas. It will probably end up in the $25MM area.
It was made to win awards, not make money. But the money people in Hollwood won't forget this. It will be interesting to see if Lee's career tanks some after this vanity piece.
Big time.
However, that won't keep the Hollywood PC-crowd of liberals and gays from voting it an Oscar just to give the finger to the rest of the country.
