Did anyone else hear this on the Michael Medved talk radio today?
A man called in, near the end of the hour. He said he had been taken his kids to the theater, and the kids movie they were waiting to see had a very long line. Brokeback Mountain was also showing at that theater. He said he sat near the ticket booth for 35 minutes, as his kids waited in line to buy tickets for their movie.
During that 35 minutes he never heard one person buy a ticket for Brokeback Mountain. However, during that 35 minutes, the “SOLD OUT” sign came on for Brokeback. Out of curiosity, he went in to the Brokeback theater, and only saw 4 people in there. The theater manager refused to comment when the man questioned him.
Is this how all those theaters are getting such high attendance for Brokeback? Imaginary theater goers?
Perhaps other theater goers can investigate for themselves this weekend.
I can only vouch for the fact that this man called in a related the story as I presented it here, not if it’s true. Callers can make up stories too. It peaked my interest though.

WalMart and these others are in a very real way responsible for the absence of inflation.
Too, just in time inventory controls, and just in time labor. These keep inflationary pressures quiescent. Low inflation means more sustainability to growth. (We don't want rapid employment growth.)
Price stability means longer recovery. Bernanke answered perfectly to the Senate committee "Yes I believe in the dual mandate..." What utter rubbish. Sustainable output growth and employment are a function of price stability. But Ben just smiled. So much for that 'Im really apolitical' stuff he's been selling.

Yes, American profligacy should be a concern. But the metrics we employ are often ill-derived: spending (consumer durables are storehouses of value), saving (we don't mark much of our 'savings' to market), etc.
The current account deficit is not problematic. In fact, the know of no 'sequential causal relationship' between capital flows and spending. We just can't say at all that the capital account is a function of the current account...
Our national debt, taken alone, is staggering. Even so, we have a 12 trillion dollar economy, which continues to post non-inflationary output growth numbers above the long term trend, and in excess of the budget deficit.
Hey, the movie industry has already noted several Left-leaning movies aren't making they money they should be. If there is anything Hollywood worships above all else it's making money and when the studios and movie theater owners don't make a profit that's when the studio heads will start to realize that the average American moviegoer wants a movie that entertains and not preaches the Leftist line. Ask Natalie Maines what happened to the Dixie Chicks when her remarks about President Bush effectively destroyed the success of that group....

The studio heads used to know that, know it now, and will continue to know it. Hasn't made a damned bit of difference so far. There have been an increasing number of liberal/left wing movies released over the past six years or so. And they continue to be released.

I don't need to ask Natalie anything. I am quite familiar with what happened to the Dixie Chicks. After suffering the initial smackdown, these twits have come back a bit, claiming their "crossover" strategy is working ("we were never only about Nashville"), and some of the radio stations which banned them have returned them to the playlists. As far as I'm concerned, I wish them nothing but failure.
Actually, the studios do send out auditors to theaters to make sure that the number of tickets sold for a show match the number of people who attended. I worked in a movie theater in high school and I saw this happen a few times.

Has anyone on this forum actually SEEN the movie? I've been reading a lot of sniggering gay jokes worthy of the average eighth grader.
Personally, I liked the movie. And the theater I saw at in (in the middle of a pretty conservative suburban area) was packed. I don't know what the sexual preferences of every single member of the audience was; my wife and I are both straight and we both thought BBM was a thoughtful, beautifully written, acted and directed film about two people caught up by something they can't understand.
What if this theater worker decided to put up the "sold out" sign because he didn't want anyone to see this movie?
That is just as valid an assumption as this "hollywood conspiracy" idea...
