Monty Python's Life of Brian has been named the greatest comedy film of all time in a Channel 4 poll.

The UK satire beat 1980s US film Airplane into second and British-made 2004 film Shaun of the Dead into third.

Spy caper Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery came fourth, while animated comedy South Park was fifth.

More than 22,000 people voted in the poll for The 50 Greatest Comedy Films, narrated by Stephen Fry and broadcast at 2100 GMT tonight.

50 GREATEST COMEDY FILMS
1st - Life of Brian
10th - This is Spinal Tap
20th - Young Frankenstein
30th - Best in Show
40th - Duck Soup
50th - The Producers (1968)

The Monty Python team also claimed the sixth spot with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Teen adventure American Pie came seventh, followed by Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles and There's Something About Mary, starring Cameron Diaz.

Rock spoof This is Spinal Tap came 10th in the survey.

The list featured a range of recent films and classics including The Ladykillers made at Ealing Studios in 1955.

British smash-hits the Full Monty and Four Weddings and a Funeral also made it onto the list in 32nd and 36th place respectively.

I liked parts of the "Holy Grail", but for the most part it's just repetitive nonsense.

Trains, Planes and Automobiles.

Something About Mary.

I guess we'll just have to disagree, then. I think it's hilarious.

There's Something About Mary. That's unbeliveable. That movie sucked.

C'mon. I still chuckle at that scene where the boyfriend, in an attempt to woo Mary, gives her vicious little poodle dog a doggie-downer, and then finds the dog unconscious, so he zaps it with the lamp cord to restart its heart only to see it catch on fire.

I was in tears at that..

Life of Brian simply didn't make me laugh.

Are you sure you saw Life of Brian, and not something else? This was a pretty funny show.

1. Blessed are the Cheese makers
2. Are there any women at this stoning?
3. Judean People's Front, bloody Judean People's Front; we'e the People's Front of Judea
4. Roman's Go Home? Is that a question or a declaration? Eunt'e, not Etea! Now write that 1,000 times before daybreak
5. 'Brothers, we should be fighting TOGETHER'.... we are
6. "I once had a friend in Wome, called Biggus ..."
7. "We shall have to search your home again" with the reply "But you haven't given us enough time to hide".
8. Lucky Bastard
9. Follow the sandal! No, follow the gourd
10. Always look on the bright side of life...

That's just off the top of my head. That was a very funny show. Pontious Pilot never fails to bring tears to my eyes. "He has a wife, you know ...."

"Arthur: ...I just chopped off your bleeding arm!!!

Knight: It's just a flesh wound."

As scenes go, I may agree with you. I literally fell into the aisle during that scene. How about the scene in 'Porky's' when the coach is doing "Lassie" in the boy's equipment room? WooooooooooOOOOOOOOO...

I liked "Holy Grail" better.

But my favorite comedy is "Dr. Strangelove (or how I learned to love the bomb)" with Peter Sellers. "Being There", also with Peter Sellers is a close second.

It is a great movie and it lambastes liberal thinking left and right.

"I want to be a woman."
"What?"
"I want to have babies."
"But you can't be a woman, Stan."
"Don't you oppress me!"
"I'm not oppressing you."
"Where's your baby going to gestate? You gonna keep it in a box?"

After a few in the protest group feel sympathy...
"We will fight for your right to have babies, brother. I mean 'sister'."

The Life of Brian I saw was a movie, not a show... ;)

Reading the quotes reminded me that yes, I DID see Life of Brian. I mean, "Blessed are the cheese makers"--that's funny to you?

"Dr. Strangelove" is a classic, I also loved all of the "Pink Panther" movies with Sellers.

Ah yes, the only movie I know of with a character named:

"Biccus Diccus"

Palin really played that part perfect, and it took everything he had not burst out in hysterics during that scene.

My favorite scene in "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is where Herbert Lom tortures his prisoners by putting on a big clawed glove and scraping it on a blackboard.
