'Rumor' fades justs as it starts; Troubled Warner pic sinks at B.O. (Hollywarped bomb by Rob Reiner)

The "Rumor" mill grinds on. With Warner's romantic comedy "Rumor Has It..." taking in just $7 million in its opening frame, second-guessing quickly ramped up. Not that Warners execs should have been surprised: Tracking data on the project -- which Rob Reiner took over directing just 10 days into shooting when tyro helmer Ted Griffin was fired -- showed the pic wasn't likely to wow.

Griffin, who penned the screenplay, might be glad he got the boot. Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time, and who lately has been preoccupied by politics and his universal preschool initiative -- and Section Eight which produced the pic for Warners.

Critics lambasted Reiner for applying a shallow gloss to what was, at its heart, a quirky, indie-like script. One even quipped that Reiner directed "between naps." But some blame might rightly rest with Griffin, who decided to give the pic a mainstream feel in casting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.

Mark Ruffalo was the only "indie" guy in the bunch. You'd never guess from the utterly mainstream marketing and poster that the film picks up where "The Graduate" left off. Instead, you might think Aniston had landed a new post-"Friends" TV show.

Pic was to be released last April, but was pushed to December because it wasn't ready. But in opting for a Christmas Day berth as counterprogramming, Warners put the film into competition with seven other wide releases. With that kind of jostling, it's no wonder this "Rumor" never got started.

Isn't this the epic of one man having affairs with women in three generations of one family?

That's right, haw haw! Those zany creative smarties in Hollywood are at it again! Another innovative comedy revolving around alcoholism and promiscuity, with none of the ugly real-life realities that can get in the way. Hope you saw it twice!

Sometimes my daughters' Barbies have more realistic dialog than many of the movies coming out these days.

Jennifer's bid to be another Audrey Hepburn is going nowhere.....thanks to Reiner's botching the job

As much as I dislike Reiner, there was no chance anywhere that someone as lightweight as Aniston could even begin to "be another Audrey Hepburn". I truly believe one of the reasons, and probably the least important, Hollywood has sunk almost as low as it can, is that there are so few actors, directors, producers with any kind of character or integrity, with any understanding of civility.

Audrey Hepburn was a "lady." She was grace personified. How could anyone think that any Hollywood Star of today could even come close to understanding her.

We have lost so much beauty. Now I better understand "Truth is beauty, beauty truth."

And I hope she watches Brad and Angelina have a thousand babies.

Would you really wish those two as parents to anyone?

Surprisingly, it looks like the public just doesn't find Jen interesting apart from Brad Pitt.

Good point. I withdraw the motion. I allocate the rest of my time to someone with more sensible requests for her suffering.

and Jen's character thinks the man is probably her father, so the first thing she does is sleep with him

never neglect the incest angle in a romantic comedy

Check out my vanity on the subject here. It starts out as an environmentalist wacko piece, but then moves in for the kill...

Cheers!

Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time.

Doesn't that automatically qualify him for an Oscar under Hollywood rules?

Costner, a guy whose star is so faded he's starting to make Christopher Lambert look like Brad Pitt.

And that's a shame...about Aniston's career taking a hit. In the few interviews I've seen, she comes across as sensible, down to earth, and a nice person.

She's a recent Bush-basher, and she's been on magazine covers nonstop for years, all the while whining about intrusions into her life. Of course one does not get on all those covers without the help of an aggressive PR person that one hires and pays handsomely. I guess she's a bit more tolerable than the odious Arabist Angelina Jolie, but only a bit.

I saw the coming attractions for Rumor Has It, and it looked like dreck. Sometimes you can just tell a movie is going to stink from the trailer.

One of toughest movie genres to pull off is romantic comedy. It takes superb writing. Usually only a handful a year do well, if that many. The last really great one I saw was Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Jennifer Aniston's career is all about her body and her hair, and they are both great, but it's not about acting. Cast a vapid actress as the star of a schlocky, unfunny screenplay, and viewers will stay away in droves.

ROTFL-----they Academy will probably award him two Oscars----one for having no hits, and another for his frigging audacity for even being a producer or director....(whatever he thinks he is).

When Aniston and Pitt split, I thought at the time it was because he wanted children. He's in his mid-forties. Gwyneth Paltrow was engaged to him at one time and even introduced him to Aniston. Gwyneth said he wanted children and she wanted a career. She felt she'd led him on. So you're right, I think. The allure was Jolie's obvious love for children.
