The "Rumor" mill grinds on. With Warner's romantic comedy "Rumor Has It..." taking in just $7 million in its opening frame, second-guessing quickly ramped up. Not that Warners execs should have been surprised: Tracking data on the project -- which Rob Reiner took over directing just 10 days into shooting when tyro helmer Ted Griffin was fired -- showed the pic wasn't likely to wow.
Griffin, who penned the screenplay, might be glad he got the boot. Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time, and who lately has been preoccupied by politics and his universal preschool initiative -- and Section Eight which produced the pic for Warners.
Critics lambasted Reiner for applying a shallow gloss to what was, at its heart, a quirky, indie-like script. One even quipped that Reiner directed "between naps." But some blame might rightly rest with Griffin, who decided to give the pic a mainstream feel in casting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.
Mark Ruffalo was the only "indie" guy in the bunch. You'd never guess from the utterly mainstream marketing and poster that the film picks up where "The Graduate" left off. Instead, you might think Aniston had landed a new post-"Friends" TV show.
Pic was to be released last April, but was pushed to December because it wasn't ready. But in opting for a Christmas Day berth as counterprogramming, Warners put the film into competition with seven other wide releases. With that kind of jostling, it's no wonder this "Rumor" never got started.
Judging from that episode, Aniston and Pitt are well rid of one another. What a nest of snakes Hollywood is!
That particular moment seems lodged in my mind.
....IMO, shows her lack of character and class.
You may have a point there about Joey carrying that crew. He's the only one whose solo show seemed to do well. (Haven't watched that, either.) And he's made the jump to film, too. As for Rumor, itself, the plot seems egregiously nasty. Why do they think smearing decency and Christian values guarantees boffo box office? It should have sunk in by now that Americans are staying away in droves.
Both Pitt and Anniston were haranguing Jenna Bush.
..my understanding is Brad was part of the initial bullying, but less intense ....
..Jennifer, I believe, actually told Jenna her father s***s.
I'd love to see this ruin Meathead, but we all know that won't happen. And it might just be that people are turned off at the notion that the character Jennifer Aniston plays is (from seeing the promos) going to be sleeping with Kevin Costner, who slept with how many other women in their family again? Like anyone but the most diehard Aniston fans will give a damn about how sitting through two hours of her agonizing over her movie family is a pack of ho's and watching it contrive its way into somehow compelling her to, as a result, go sleep with Costner, a guy whose star is so faded he's starting to make Christopher Lambert look like Brad Pitt.
Me? Kick America's Sweetheart while she's down? Nevah happen. }}}}cackle{{{{
That's it. I take back everything positive I thought or said about Pitt's reject. Better yet, get her to Iraq ala that kid who just came home in one piece...Hassan. The plot could be immersion journalism. Have her stay with an Iraqi family for a month or two, hear stories of what life was like under Saddam Hussein...better yet, have her stay with a Kurdish family.
Not sure of the plot......you could not pay me to see or even read about a Reiner film.
However, it does sound like something self-absorbed, mean-spirited Hollywarped types would put out at the holidays----just to stick it to Christians.
Love your review---you oughta be writing for Variety.
Shirley MacLain is an empty-headed liberal from way back, so her appearance in a Rob Reiner film really keeps it 'all in the family'. (Sorry.)
Since Jolie is a bi, it must have been an interesting impregnation.

...it must be the babies....
..I appreciated her adopting those little lost babes...
..I tend to think she was a lost child too....and is just now understanding accountability and responsibility.
I know one can't believe everything one reads...
..but I understand she keeps 1/3 of what she makes....(for bills ....and fun things)...
..saves 1/3.....
...and gives 1/3 away to charities.
Yes, I know she's Buddhist.....
..and is somewhat provocative in her interviews.... and has a sullied reputation....
..but folks can change, and babies can do it....
..and maybe, just maybe, Brad will grow up too, being around her.
That's my take.
...I loved that funny movie.
I guess liberal mindset just saturates and empties the brain of all goodness and creativity.
and now jennifer has gotten dumped for not being all women to little brad, could not have happened to a nicer little witch
Is meathead still pulling down $100,000 plus from California's anti-smoking program?
I have not seen that much of the new show. I just always thought he was the funniest. IMO, the funny/silly people have more natural acting talent than the non-funnies.
I agree, smut and anti-Xian values are not going to pack a theatre.
Meathead says it all.
I love the smell of hollyweirdos like reiner burning.
