The "Rumor" mill grinds on. With Warner's romantic comedy "Rumor Has It..." taking in just $7 million in its opening frame, second-guessing quickly ramped up. Not that Warners execs should have been surprised: Tracking data on the project -- which Rob Reiner took over directing just 10 days into shooting when tyro helmer Ted Griffin was fired -- showed the pic wasn't likely to wow.
Griffin, who penned the screenplay, might be glad he got the boot. Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time, and who lately has been preoccupied by politics and his universal preschool initiative -- and Section Eight which produced the pic for Warners.
Critics lambasted Reiner for applying a shallow gloss to what was, at its heart, a quirky, indie-like script. One even quipped that Reiner directed "between naps." But some blame might rightly rest with Griffin, who decided to give the pic a mainstream feel in casting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.
Mark Ruffalo was the only "indie" guy in the bunch. You'd never guess from the utterly mainstream marketing and poster that the film picks up where "The Graduate" left off. Instead, you might think Aniston had landed a new post-"Friends" TV show.
Pic was to be released last April, but was pushed to December because it wasn't ready. But in opting for a Christmas Day berth as counterprogramming, Warners put the film into competition with seven other wide releases. With that kind of jostling, it's no wonder this "Rumor" never got started.
Oh gosh, if I get talked into going to another movie that has some type of political message, then I absolutely deserve the loss of that wad of cash. I somehow went to see Constant Gardener, then that Salveni(it was so bad, I want to forget the movie and the name ha ha, it was the movie about ME and big oil companies. I kept telling my husband I just want to see King Kong.
It isn't bad if you watch it with the sound off like I do.
I thought they were going to call it "The Blue Angel Meets Doktor Mabuse."
So (I'm a little rusty on my Latin) you chose the English translation?
I wish people who wanted to do comedy would stay out of politics...good comedy requires an even hand.
About the movie...the potential was there for a very dark, very wicked movie that would've been kind of a statement of the bizarreness of the values in THE GRADUATE. I don't know what the original script was, but Reiner should've gone with the chemistry right there in front of him. That chemistry was that all of the women found Kevin Costner adorable and irresistable, while who was that pathetic weakling who was Aniston's love interest?....was just not interesting.
Reiner's lost it, for sure (assuming he ever had it)
I'm not doberville, but I'll pipe up anyways:
BOSTON LEGAL!
I have that one too, and it's got more detail but I think Colin Firth (Darcy) is a bit of a stiff. I think you'll like it a lot.
But for 2 hours and wanting to freshen things up a bit, the latest was pretty good.
I've only seen that show once, although I've heard it's funny. I'll check it out again! Maybe it's on DVD..that would be better.
BEST show on tv!! "Denny Crane"
Thanks. Some of the best reviews of the movie are on this thread.
She doesn't consider it a personal flaw. That is why I would mock her. She is proud of her pot addiction.
Someone posted a link to NORML Celebs on another thread today. From that page, I read the excerpt of her interview.
I'm still curious as to why a restaurant owner who knew that (s)he was serving minors did so ANYWAY without prosecution (a convenience store clerk would not walk). AND that manager called 911 to report this crime AND the press. I've never heard of 911 being used to deny a minor a sale. You take the fake ID. You nail it to your bar wall. You deny them the sale. You may even kick them out of the establishment. How many other 911 calls has (s)he made with this problem (UT has a lot of underage drinking students and that is a popular place)?
But people remember what they want from the case. The real question is why Secret Service agents would permit such actions while they are guarding a member of the first family. Would they provide "cover" if someone wanted to go to a crack house for an hour or so? "Don't worry about guns, I got your back!"
I thought JLH looked carnivorous in the role - like she was waiting for a chance to consume her admirers. I saw nothing of the need to be loved, dignity or class of Audrey Hepburn.
It didn't help that I had already seen an interview of JLH, where she claimed the most difficult part of imitating Audrey Hepburn was having her tits strapped down. THAT convinced me she could NEVER play a plausible Audrey - and I was right.
You just about sum up the Hollywarped of yesterday-----and the one of today.
It's all about me, myself, and I, among the current crop of self-absorbed starlets, and the anti-cultural vehicles in which they act.
No wonder Hollywaste is in a financial slump.
Who wants to see a bunch of chemically altered egotists prancing around, tearing down Western civilization?
Absolutely best show on TV.
Tuesday nights at 10 EST!
Where?
doesn't that make her a bigger star?
Nope.
That's pretty low. I never had much of any opinion of Anniston, but this gives me one. It's really lousy to hit someone when they're down like that. Jenna deserved better.
We'd [Brad Pitt and her] pass her [Jenna Bush] in the hall, and Brad would say, 'Heyyyy, Jenna, wanna beer? I got one in the truck!'"
When and where would those two assholes pass Jenna, in what hall???????????????????
Thank you
