'Rumor' fades justs as it starts; Troubled Warner pic sinks at B.O. (Hollywarped bomb by Rob Reiner)

The "Rumor" mill grinds on. With Warner's romantic comedy "Rumor Has It..." taking in just $7 million in its opening frame, second-guessing quickly ramped up. Not that Warners execs should have been surprised: Tracking data on the project -- which Rob Reiner took over directing just 10 days into shooting when tyro helmer Ted Griffin was fired -- showed the pic wasn't likely to wow.

Griffin, who penned the screenplay, might be glad he got the boot. Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time, and who lately has been preoccupied by politics and his universal preschool initiative -- and Section Eight which produced the pic for Warners.

Critics lambasted Reiner for applying a shallow gloss to what was, at its heart, a quirky, indie-like script. One even quipped that Reiner directed "between naps." But some blame might rightly rest with Griffin, who decided to give the pic a mainstream feel in casting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.

Mark Ruffalo was the only "indie" guy in the bunch. You'd never guess from the utterly mainstream marketing and poster that the film picks up where "The Graduate" left off. Instead, you might think Aniston had landed a new post-"Friends" TV show.

Pic was to be released last April, but was pushed to December because it wasn't ready. But in opting for a Christmas Day berth as counterprogramming, Warners put the film into competition with seven other wide releases. With that kind of jostling, it's no wonder this "Rumor" never got started.

I agree,I loved her in "Steel Magnolias" and "Terms of Endearment". She is definitely from the age of Hollywood that acually had REAL actors.

I agree with you about MacLinae...she's on my list of the five people I'd want to have dinner with. Anyone who counts Robert Mitchum as the love of thier life is OK by me! She's nutty, but she's smart. Her performance in Postcards from the Edge was incredible. Made a disasterous movie ALMOST watchable!

This is Spinal Tap was made over 20 years ago. Reiner is a one-hit-wonder.

I've seen The Apartment, and MacLaine can act. I liked her in The Trouble with Harry and she was a wonderful dancer. I never saw the film all the way through, the one where she's the widow of an ex-president, with Nicholas Cage as the reluctant Secret Serviceman. But in what I saw, she was terrific. I just don't understand the mindset of celebrities who earn a great deal of money, in many cases an obscene amount, and as a result think it's their God-given duty to tell the rest of the country how to think. They surround themselves with flunkies and actually believe their own press releases. They think they're demi-gods. The present Hollywood generation uses foul language, too...which is really offensive.

"Everything is imploding. It all seems to lead back to our dear president.”

I suppose it's also President Bush's fault that Brad left her for Angelina. Jennifer is just another empty-headed Hollywood skank.

So Reiner inherited a bomb. The only reason to go is to see Mark Ruffalo, who is among a handful of 30-something actors who are really making their mark in Hollywood now. He's in the top tier. He gave a great performance in Collateral. He'll win an Oscar one of these years. As far as Costner is concerned, like most actors he's as good as the material her gets. Great scripts are rare.

To quote Clint Eastwood "A great film begins with a great script." ;)

Of course none of them are saints...but given what they are...I don't blame Pitt. Of course Jolie isn't mother of the year...she's a character...and she's strong. She just seems 180 degrees away from Aniston. I think men find that very attractive as opposed to someone needy, like Aniston. And who knows if they got together before he divorced Aniston.

Would you really wish those two as parents to anyone?

Yes. Why not? What a nasty thing to say. She's already saved the lives of two children and will give them opportunities they would never have had.

Kevin Costner can't act. His droning, monotone voice puts me to sleep.

I agree. He's SOOOO boring. He's lucky to have been in some extraordinary movies that worked despite him.

Wasn't Rumor Has it about some guy sleeping with grandma and mother. Saw the previews, didn't look like an appealing story line to me. Trash

Terms of Endearment I did see, and MacLaine played a complicated character with intelligence, wit, understanding. Genius casting with Nicholson. As for Robert Mitchum, well, those heavy-lidded eyes, that whiskey voice. Exuded menace. He was quite an actor. Robert DeNiro was great in the remake of Cape Fear, but didn't touch Mitchum's performance in the first film.

ditto. The plot was just gross.

Anyone see "Surrender Dorothy" on tv last night? I watched the first 5 minutes and was disgusted.

As has been posted here before, Jolie is no friend to Israel, more so that Spielberg. Is she beautiful? Of course. But I think she's skanky too. :) I have been around actors enough to know that their public personas are carefully and deliberately crafted, including their do-gooder activities. Jolie and the UN - a perfect match. High-minded on the surface, corrupt at the core.

Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time

They had better not be talking about the greatest film of all time.."North"..if anyone dares insult that fine and outstanding film, I shall have to ask them outside to settle our differences..I mean any movie with Bruce Willis in a bunny suit is up their with "Citizen Kane".....Carl Reiner, I mean Rob Reiner, is one of our finest filmmakers..

"Citizen Kane" the most over-rated movie EVER.
