PORT ORANGE -- A man who woke up this morning bleeding from a bullet wound to his forehead later drove himself to work, and then to a hospital, where he was in stable condition this afternoon after undergoing brain surgery, Port Orange police said.

Glen Betterley, 53, of 5267 Orange Ave., told police he woke up about 4:30 a.m. and noticed blood on his face but didn't know know where it came from. He asked his girlfriend, Emma Lorene Larsen, 65, if she was responsible but she could not explain it. So he washed his face and went back to bed.

When the bleeding continued and could not be stopped, Betterley told police he got up at 6:30 a.m. and drove himself to work to leave a message explaining he was going to the hospital.

The emergency room staff at Halifax Medical Center concluded Betterley had been shot and called police. After talking to him, police contacted Larsen by telephone to tell her they wanted to question her. A short time later, officers outside of Betterley's home said they heard a single gunshot. They forced their way into the house and found Larsen dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Of natural causes ... or the other kind?

What exactly qualifies as "natural" causes?

We get these safety bulliten things every week at work, and a couple weeks ago, they discussed a guy who had a piece of rebar go right through his head. He was conscious and in no pain during the whole ordeal.

You know - my girlfriend is a couple years older than me (she's 45, I'm 42) - but I don't think she owns a gun. So I'm safe for now - she doesn't know where mine are.

Yes - that's right - I said "my girlfriend." I hope that everyone out there has their sh*t together - it's the Apocalypse, I'm telling ya.

Gotta be careful; them women sometimes get strange - can't say anything about men, I'm already strange and can tell the difference.

There are no pain sensor nerves in your brain, so it is not unbelievable.

Well, a bullet to the brain would not qualify as natural ... neither would a heart attack ... at least not if it was caused by a bullet to the heart.

Can't be scrapple. Scrapple looks like a small loaf of gray bread. It may be disgusting, but when cooked to a slight crispness, it's one of life's guilty pleasures. Scrapple, corned beef hash, eggs and some fried potatos with a huge glass of orange juice and some coffee that is strong enough to strip barnacles off of a tanker hull. Now *that's* good eatin'.

Who in the world does this ?

My family. My grandmother drove herself twenty miles to the hospital after a major stroke because she didn't want to raise a fuss.

My mother broke her leg sleepwalking and made her brother drive 15 miles to help her because the ambulance service has a volunteer force and those people need their sleep for a real emergency. A 60 year old woman with a spiral fracture of the fibula doesn't qualify as an emergency in her mind.

I did that after my first heart attack. Three in the morning, nobody on the road, but I drove to the hospital with one hand on the parking brake, just in case. I figured that I'd get to the hospital before an ambulance crew could get to me.

with one hand on the parking brake

And the parking brake was supposed to do what? Give you cpr? Call an ambulance if you pass out? Run like lassie and get help? You're not bulletproof you cantankerous old fart. People count on you and people care for you.

/lecture your family really wanted to give you

when I saw "man with bullet in brain drives" I thought this must be a democrat. When I saw that he drives to work, I began to wonder.
