I nominate early Yes "Close to the Edge" might be one of the best albums ever......Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" and "Foxtrot".........King Crimson "Court of the Crimson King" to name a few, any others?

I prefer regressive rock. Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, etc.

Modern era (post 1995)? Sunny Day Real Estate, Coheed and Cambria, Lightning Bolt, Mogwai, and The Mars Volta are all worth checking out.

ELP, until they jumped the shark with Love Beach (or, arguably, Works II)

KC and the Sunshine Band.

I'm not sure what you mean, because to me, Yes, Genesis and King Crimson are not progressive rock bands. It's even sort of questionable if the later iterations of Genesis were a rock band at all ... they were more like pop.
As for myself, I'd nominate The Pixies. Or, if you're lookiing for something of more recent vintage, The Flaming Lips.

Yes "Close to the Edge" Me too. But, the kids these days are doing stuff 1000 times better. Don't be an old crab, listen!

Including Art Rock in with Progressive Rock, I would give an honorable mention to the Alan Parsons Project and ELO.

Rush in the late 70s, with A Farewell to KIngs and Hemispheres.

Have not a clue what a Prog is, but can give you my favorite bagpiper...does that count?

Well there is never just one at the top IMO. I like many, cant even name them all.
Yes Genesis with "Home By The Sea" was a good one.
More recently I like Depeche Mode, and some of the Cure. Lindsey Buckingham's 1993 "Out Of The Cradle" I liked also.

early Yes "Close to the Edge" might be one of the best albums ever......Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" and "Foxtrot".........King Crimson "Court of the Crimson King" All excellent choices, and I agree with all of them ... lemme add Jethro Tull "Thick As A Brick" and Emerson Lake & Palmer "Brain Salad Surgery" to that list :)
To: Gillmeister
The Gabriel/Collins era was certainly the Genesis that I liked most. Supper's Ready is one of my favorites
Don't forget to add Emerson Lake and Palmer to the very top of the list.
Jethro Tull
SuperTramp
Renaissance
David Bowie
Jefferson Airplane
Electric Light Orchestra
The Pretenders
and on occation - the great Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
There were so many progressive rock / art rock / classical rock bands, it's hard to pick them all.

Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" Can you tell me where my country's gone ... cried a uniform to his true loves eyes .........
