I think they are changing your sound set ups. Go into the control panel, and click on sounds and audio devices. Then go to sounds tabs and find mail notification or other items, play the sound associated with it, then change it to whatever you want. It should give you all the wave files available and you can test them to see if you like them. Then save the sound scheme to what you like...

First off; you are either infested with Spyware, or viri'.

Simple question. Do you have broadband? If so, run do not walk... run to WalMart and buy a ROUTER. You can get any brand you like, Linksys, NetGear, DLink ... I don't care. Think of it like this. You can surf at really great speeds; however so can any spyware or virus you happen to pick up. A ROUTER will block out software that is LOOKING for someone to infect; this will greatly reduce your exposure. There is a name for a person with broadband and without a firewall ... that word is Idiot. A software firewall (ZoneAlarm) is a viable, free alternative; however this program will chew up processor cycles; where as a Router will simply plug in in front of your PC and firewall you against outside attacks without affecting your performance. A Router will set you back ~$25.

Bear in mind, I said ROUTER, not HUB, not Switch .. you want and need a ROUTER (if you have broadband). If you have a dial up connection; you at least have to dial in, and the spyware is limited as to how fast it can download by your modem.

Secondly, the Router will enable you (should you wish) to start up a home network. You can connect ~120 PC's together behind your Router, play Quake Arena, surf, print, email and all share your outside link. To your ISP this will simply look like 1 really busy PC.

Next, go to www.microsoft.com and download the FREE program Microsoft AntiSpyware. Run it.

Next, you want to download SpyBot- Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) install this, run it, and then immunize your PC against future attacks. Yes, it's top rated by the various PC sites; and it's free.

Finally, you want to run and get Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). Download it, install it, and run it.

These 4 things should go a long way to fixing what ails you, as well as preventing fresh installations from jumping right back on.

And for goodness sake; uninstall GameSpy; this is spyware. Other examples of popular spyware are WeatherBug, Google Toolbar and Yahoo Toolbar/Messenger.

Further to b4its2late. Goto control panel and set your audio settings to default.

It the problem persists you probably have a corrupted audio codec.

Update all your audio and video drivers or run Semantec Win Doctor.

Failing that unplug your speakers and get headphones. Default audio cues are useless and down right annoying.
