The death scene he does is I think the finest piece of film acting I've ever seen. It gets me every single time.
Only one better death scene....Slim Pickens and Katy Jurado in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. They play an older married couple who are still very much in love. There's a shoot-out and she picks up a rifle when he gets in trouble. It looks like he's ok at the end but then he sits on a log by the stream, opens his coat and we see the blood. The series of looks that these two actors exchange as they wordlessly acknowledge everything, with Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" in the background, is about the best forty seconds ever put on film.

King Kong - at that moment when the music changes and you know for sure that the planes are getting to him.

"Slim Pickens and Katy Jurado in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid."
You see, you are making me cry just describing it. I'm not big on westerns, although hubby likes them so I see plenty of them. Never saw this one, but maybe I will one day, I'll make a point to remember it.

I'm a writer and film-maker. For me that scene is the gold-standard. (Plus I think that Katy Jurado was one of the most powerfully beautiful women ever on screen).

Definitely worth watching. A true modern classic, IMO.

That scene in Casablanca gets my vote too. I read somewhere that a lot of the "extras" in that scene were actual war refugees and that their tears were real.
