The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

No news here, either. I think it's a widespread epidemic of holiday-itis.

I created a programming problem to keep me occupied ... I'm busy tormenting Microsoft MVPs with my questions.

There aren't all-night stores, but there's Rat Shack, there's Fry's (ick spit) ... and then there are the online stores. And then there's the cool local stores.

MVPs?

Yeah...tough getting a hold of people this time of year. I'm just still worried that I'm not gonna get my chance to interview. But we shall see. Maybe they just decided to start fresh on Monday - do all the contacting and interviewing next week. Here's hoping!

Heh...my method of Christmas shopping (which worked well, actually) is to just go out and meander for a few hours, grabbing an item for each person as I spot things that appeal. I did NO planning...but it worked probably faster than if I had.

I just hope I can get stuff mailed out in time. I'm more worried on that score.

I liked it better the second time through. Mostly because I didn't have to try to guess where the heck the story was going. Zooming out and looking at the whole story improves the experience - which shouldn't be confused with it being a great experience. Spielberg tried to tell way too many stories in one film. Less is more - especially when dealing with tens of thousands of years.

Well, I think we've put off the lefse making... it's at least not tomorrow.

The main thing that bugged my brothers - and what bugs me about other Spielberg films - is that the message more or less seemed to be that there isn't anything special about being human. As if robots can ever equal human life.

Let me recommend ...

That was a big theme. I read into it, "this pinocchio boy is the only thing left of humanity, what will it say about us?" That alone could have been an interesting story... if Spielberg had just left it at that.

Mmmwell... gotta go do evening chores. Am doing a quick shopping trip tomorrow to get the last two items on my list and get to the grocery store for last minute things. Then it's cook, clean, wrap presents, blah blah blah.

I'm still deciding when to bake. Don't wanna do it too early...but I guess I gotta do it soon. Maybe Monday...mail stuff out Tuesday. Or so.

I actually kinda enjoyed A.I., but I might be biased because the score is one of my all-time favorites. One of John Williams' best, IMHO.
