The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Back in the deeps of time, my college course - ENGL 200: Tolkien - held a contest of who would star in the live action movie of LOTR, if it were ever made.

Those were some of the cast picks.

Sir Alec Guiness was Gandalf...

Today I enjoyed a duty-free day, with a Lord Of The Rings Marathon of my very own, and thought of you folks at once.

Good to hear. We keep you guys over there in our prayers regularly. Take care, be safe, and Merry Christmas!

Keith Whitley is sooo cool ... his voice is very warm and intimate.

Well, I looked at his CDs, and couldn't find one that had everything on it. He did a song early in his career, Miami, My Amy, that I like ... but if you don't get his signature song, I'm No Stranger To The Rain, or When You Say Nothing At All, you don't have Keith Whitley.

You know his personal story, right?

Got the car washed, the kitchen scraps out to the compost bin, and the furnace filter changed.

It's egg nog time!

There are a couple CDs with both of those songs...I guess I just pick one at random from there! This is the one I'm kinda leaning toward, I think.

Yeah, I know his story. Sad that things happened as they did. So many others struggle but then have the chance to pull themselves up again.

I'm wondering if the grocery would have whole chickens that aren't frozen.

It's still early enough we could have roast chicken for dinner.

Roast chicken? :)

I'm still working on clearing out the freezer although I did get a steak for today. Got a lot of chicken broth I'll need to do something with next week. Lots of soup, I suppose.

Roasted chicken? What would be the right way to say it? Chicken, anyhow. And maybe gravy. And I can maybe make soup with the carcass.

hehehe...I was thinking of the scene where Frodo rescues the special Shire salt.

Roast chicken sounds good, though.

Had to go to two different grocery stores to find an unfrozen chicken that wasn't just a bitty fryer, but I got one. It's in the oven! Rubbed olive oil and garlic and stufflikethat on it and under the skin...should be good.

Now, if you want his bluegrass stuff, try the Kentucky Bluebird CD --- if you can find it. RCA put that one together after Keith's death; it's made up of a bunch of stuff --- interviews, cuts --- from his days with Ricky Skaggs and other bluegrass folks.

Didja stuff the chicken?

On the Food Network, the big thing is to bake chickens with aromatics in the body cavity --- lemons, fresh rosemary, sage, and thyme --- but no traditional stuffing.

Saw Jaime Oliver (Naked Chef) stuff a chicken like that. Then, he smunched together a hunk of room temperature butter, lemon zest, crushed garlic, fresh rosemary, sage, and thyme. He rubbed the mix over the skin, then stuck the rest of it, in one big lump, under the skin of the roaster, right on the breastbone. Oh, mamma, did that look good when he took it out of the oven!

Evening OT - ANY time is Egg Nogg time, especially when it's consumed between Thanksgiving and New Years Day.

Just finished watching the Trans-Siberian Orchestra "The Ghost of Christmas Eve" on local PBS, outside of the annoying fund drive, it was an excellent program. Some of the arrangements of the Christmas classic songs were simply fascinating.

That's one I want, for sure! But I think Ben would be happier with one of the more country albums.

Didn't stuff it - just rubbed it inside and out with garlic and spices, and put a bunch of that under the skin, too.

I've seen recipes where they put lemon and fresh garlic in the cavity and under the skin. I imagine that'd be vey tasty.

Well...if this tastes good, we'll make 'em again. Whole chickens aren't that pricey!
