The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Is he using a kit to start out with?

Yup. He got a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas. I figgured it was a good place to start. He can upgrade when he outgrows it.

So ironic... on so many levels.

Ramius's first batch was pretty bad (tasted like burnt electrical wiring) but I think he drank it anyway.

Those usually include a lot of the equipment you need anyway - I know Dad's added stuff, but for a long while he used the stuff from the kit but bought his own ingredients.

No... that was the second batch we named "Jet City Ale" that tasted like burned electrical wiring. The first batch was "Snorting Elk Stout" and it was pretty good.

Kinda fun note on that:

It was Frank (married our Mom in the 80's) that identified the taste of the Ale. Great guy. He actually worked (in addition to being a draftsman) as a taster at the Olympia brewery. They tested all their employees for ability to distinguish and identify various subtle tastes. They picked him as having a sufficiently sensitive palate... and so he was one of the group of tasters that they used to sample and quality-control batches of beer.

[sigh] What a great job.

But he tried our ale... took a few sips... thoughtfully... and announced "burned electrical wiring".

I sipped some more... and dang it if he didn't nail it perfectly. It ~did~ taste like burned electrical wiring. Should have named it "short circuit" ale or something.

But the previous batch, the stout, was actually ~really~ good. But stouts are easy to get right. You can foul up pretty bad and they still taste good. Ales are a little harder, and lagers are very difficult for a homebrewer to get right.

I don't think we're going to worry about a bad batch. Jack (the dog) just went nuts when we opened the can of beer mix - dark, syrupy, molasses-smelling, stout mix. He's totally begging. "Please oh please oh please I promise to be good if you justs give me some of that!" I'm sure he'd be happy to lap up any mistakes.

Big'ol is so proud of Jack's good taste.

But stouts are easy to get right.

That's good to know 'cuz they're Big'ol's favorites.

hehe... I've probably hexed the batch now. By 'easy' I mean only relatively so.

I really enjoyed homebrewing. Should do it again one of these days. Makes the house smell great. :-)

I think Sam is a home brewer... right?

A whole group of Hobbit Holers traipsing thru Scotland.

It would sure be less expensive than flying to New Zealand!

Well, I almost fell asleep at the computer about 10 last night, so I figured I needed to hit the sack. Woke up a couple of times; around 2 am, then again around 6 am, but went back to sleep both times. Finally hauled out around noonish.

I think I took care of the sleep deficit I had!

Heh...when my sister's lab was not much more than a puppy, she figured out how to cut into beer cans with her teeth. Dad had to always buy bottled or make sure they were out of her reach.

Never bothered with soda...how she could tell what was inside an aluminum can, we never figgered out. Doesn't seem like much of the the smell would make it through!

DANG Sam!! I was thinking about you last night, wondering how your Christmas had been. Sounds even worse than Corin's!! I will be happy to put Jeanne on our Parish Prayer list. You and the kids will be in my prayers too!

Hope she gets better very soon!

*sigh*

Mr. Beepy has loud music blaring. It's daytime, so I can't really complain...but is it reallllly necessary to listen to it at such a high volume?

I'd go out for awhile, but I don't have anywhere to go.

I'm back!

Tire's on and brakes are done. :-D

Rosie - the book store is always nice (and quiet) and doesn't cost a thing. Unless you decide to buy something, of course.

I enjoy going to Barnes & Nobles, picking up a picture book (usually Scotland or Alaska) to look through while drinking a cappuccino. It's an affordable escape!

My trouble is that I always find something I want! ;-)

But I think I gotta go somewhere. I'd like to go up and thump his head against the wall in rhythm with his "music", at this point.

Almost done the scarf, though. Already fringed one end, and just need to do the other and trim it, if I can find scissors sharp enough to trim. I had *exactly* enough yarn - absolutely none to spare, but exactly enough for the fringe strands - the yarn ran out at the end of the last one. Fascinating...

Wow. It ended up exactly enough? That is fascinating!

Well, if you've no other plans, no harm will come of hanging out at the bookstore all day!

Just stay away from the section of books you like. Stick with picture books.

Well...I went out for awhile. But apparently he still hasn't gotten it out of his system. Grrr.

Time to finish the scarf. Then maybe a movie, I guess. I suppose it's too early to start primping...heh.
