The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

OK, most tasks completed for the day. I got all packages out except for the one I don't have an address for - ugh! And scoped out the place where I'll have the inteview tomorrow. Once I found it, it was easy to get there. Or it'll be easy next time, I should say. It's almost next door to where I've gone to drop off applications, and there's a metered lot across the street. I'm hoping that lot won't be hopelessly crowded...but I expect it won't, this time of year. Just gotta remember to bring quarters...

Still have to run to the library, but traffic was pretty lousy when I was out, so I guess I'm waiting for later. That means going out in the dark, unfortunately.

If it's not telling secrets, about how long did it take you to make that blanket?

I started at the beginning of the month and have worked on it an hour or more a day ever since. Just finished today. It got quicker as I went along, though, so I imagine if I do another, it won't be as hard - unless I do a more complex pattern.

How did Rose's interview go?

So, about 20-30 hours of work?

I wonder how much a handmade blanket like that would go for on eBay....

Probably more hours than that...but I was really slow at first.

As for the eBay thing...hm, I dunno! This one had a LOT of flaws, but I suppose people who were good at such things could probably make a little pocket change that way. The materials are a little spendy, but I imagine there are place you can buy 'em in bulk.

I think it went okay, but what do I know?

It's a Database Administrator's position with the Governor's Office .. and, yeah, I would probably get to talk to high muckety-mucks in the state, including the Governor, Rick Perry. I interviewed with the IT Director, who said she got fifty applicants, and twenty good applicants. She expects to narrow that down to two or three, who will be called back for a technical interview with the whole team. She told me flat out that she would be calling me back for the tech interview.

So ... we'll see.

Thanks for asking, girlfriend! It's a long road, you know? Nice to see friendly faces on it now and again!

Man...so you already know you're in the top three? That's fantastic! I'll be praying for you!

I'm a little nervous about tomorrow...I feel like my interviewee skills are already rusty. But maybe that's in my favor, I dunno.

Since there's no one there 'cept you and the kitties, and no one will be able to see or hear you, why not practice interviewing tonight? You could ask the questions that have been asked in the past and think up good answers for them!

I hear you on that one - its been a while since I sewed clothes for erin, as it was so much more convenient to just go buy it - but since she has hit that "certain age" its become harder...much harder. so I may have to break down soon and start cutting out pattern pieces.

cant wait to see the pic!

Pretty much, though I've yet to make it to the library. Part of me just says "pay the fine for one more day, and take it tomorrow". I really don't wanna go out just for that.

Gonna bake my first batch of sourdough bread in a bit here...hope it works OK!

Heh, the last real piece of clothing I made for Clare was her First Communion Dress. I couldn't find one that she liked because they were all, in her words, 'too foofy'. The only things I've sewn for her in the last few years have been costumes for Anime conventions.

I used to sew a lot, but when we moved here there were so many stores that had great discounts on kids' clothes, it just wasn't worth it to do it myself.

Clare doesn't like today's teen fashions, so I usually order her clothes from Eddie Bauer and Lands' End. She's a casual gal, so nice sweaters and tees, khakis and jeans work just fine. She has a couple of dresses and skirts if she needs to really dress up, but nice trousers and blouses work well, too.

I've kinda been doing that...though there have been new and different questions every time. And I have no idea what kinda other candidates I'll be up against - I'm worrying there! I almost think for the staffing agency job, they just said "Send one that sounds good"...I'm not sure they even interviewed others. They did really like me, though, so if they call all references, I know I've got that going for me.

And at least for this interview, I'm coming out of a position I just finished and that I really did well on and that's local...so I'm feeling perhaps more confident than I have for others, and if I'm lucky, that will come across in my favor.

You'll do well, hon. Don't worry about it!! Having had the local experience should be something really in your favor.

There's an Eddie Bauer store at the mall here...it's a very dangerous place. I used to get stuff from them mail order, but being able to walk in makes it harder to resist.

On the plus side, they often have stuff on clearance at the end of a season, so I can get some things much cheaper than I could mail order.

Mmm... sourdough... I'm working up my resume tonight. Dad is going to arrange for me to talk to someone at his work about their summer internship program. Just to get all my little ducks in a row.
