The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

OB is watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation--he does love that movie so.

I used to work with a guy who was just like the Chevy Chase character so it's doubly funny for me.

Like it when the squirrel gets loose.

heh, reminds me of the gnomes in the yard of the Weasely's home in the Harry Potter books (I cannot remember which one specifcally mentions them, maybe it was Goblet of Fire?).

We did one brief drive-about-town to look at lights. I like the brightly colored old style ones with the big bulbs. Jen says I have lousy taste. ;-)

It'd be pretty to go again in the next few days, as we have snow! But I'd probably end up in Cheyenne if I tried it on my own, and also everything except for main roads are a little slick.

They make stocking hangers that are just colored hooks, don't they? Go with any collection...

Or are those tacky? ;-)

They make all kinds. The ~plan~ had been to get all different Santas, but to do it either just after Christmas or throughout the season so it wouldn't be so spendy all at once.

Well, I have to admit I'm a fan of the small lights, and not the big ones in all kinds of colors ;~D

I like quantity regardless.. last night we drove through some of the neighborhoods that are always advertised as having good displays... one neighborhood was expecting so much traffic they had kids selling hot cocoa, and a Santa bellringing for the Salvation Army ;~D

I like small ones, too...but there are soooo many of the plain clear lights that it's nice to have some slightly cheesy variety...

I like color groupings... Couple yards that had the trees done each in a different color, all red, all blue, all green... that looks cool, and really makes the color look a lot more intense than if they're all mixed together..

Back home, there was a house on the top of the hill above my house. They had a line of little bushes along the crest of the hill on either side of the drive, and each tree would get a different color of lights. I really liked that.

Oh I love those pre-designed cookies! They are VEY tasty. I've not usually had much luck with sugar cookies that you cut out, but I'm going to try it again this year. I have some really neat cookie cutters I want to try out. I got some of them at that King Arthur Flour store we went to in VT., Rosie.

I LOVE Marshmallow Creme Fudge! I'm gonna make some with some Bittersweet Chocolate Chips so it won't be too sweet.

Didn't say you had lousy taste. I said I like looking at those big ugly bright ones but that they're tacky and ugly and not going in my yard without strenous negotiations.

Heh, so apparently three glasses of wine is my limit at home. I got all giggly two hours ago and at least now it's bedtime.

Yeah, we like to go on a 'tacky alert' drive each year. We look to see who has the most egregious display of lights and figurines in town. ;o)

All giggly without even calling me? See that totally negates your siblings taunting.
