Was just listening to the news about them planning on using cranes to move the crashed airplane on the road in Chicago..and the question struck me...*do* these large passenger planes have "hitching points" around it's outer fuselage that are hooked into the main frame, that the plane can be lifted by without causing structural damage in and of the act of moving the plane?
Think slings.
Yeah i thought that, but wouldn't the slings creat
stress points that would damage the plane? Cause
the "skin" where the slings are placed to buckle?
There would also be high stresses at any hoist points if they were used instead of slings.
I can only speak to the engines and nacelles - each sub-component has hoist points built in so that large parts can be removed safely with a crane and put on or taken off of dollies or fixtures. And the hoistsp oints and surrounding structure are designed to carry the loads.
My educated guess is that there must be hoist points on major sub-sections - nose, forward fuselage, aft fuselage, wings, pylons, tails, etc. Let's watch and see what happens - we'll all learn something.
Thought you might be able to answer this one.
The sling has spreaders at the top and bottom, they connect to a hardpoint near the gear, the "bands" of the sling are kept away from the fuselage by the spreaders.
Areonautics?
Is this about sailing/flying on Mars?
"Areo" refers to things Martian.
So i juxtaposed the e and the r...I plead guilty.
..or mildly dyslexic if you prefer...or just an
unmitigated lazy typer...

Baby Driver,
Check post #6 - I believe it was meant for you.

Thanks all for the info..i saw a clip from the site..and
indeed they wee using a sling.
Thanks Dasher. :o)
Why would any airline want to fly the extra structural weight on every single plane they have just to avoid very rare occurances like this? It sounds like the insurance company might have already decided to right off this plane.
I can't see as how it would be all that mutch
extra weight...all we're talhing about, are some
extra struts that fo from the planes mainframe,
that can be extended out from the planes skin
through access panels for a crane to attach on to.
