But if you click on "File" then "Save as" it should create a whole new file if you rename the file. That way you have the old file with no editing and the new file with editing.

No, you are not a doofus. It's just something that comes from experience with word processing programs. I worked for years as tech support for that kind of stuff, and I've written a lot of papers. You'll learn. :-)

*sigh*
One more thing...
There are two save commands in word processing programs. If you just chose "Save", it automatically overwrites the old file. If you choose "Save as" it gives you an opportunity to rename the file and create a new file so that you don't write over the old one.
Okay... Now I'm really out.
