NEED ADVICE: Found Money (vanity)
12/9/05 | NYCynic

Posted on 12/09/2005 2:58:01 PM PST by NYCynic

After work this afternoon I found a small wad of cash on the train platform. I was thinking of putting up a flyer that says something to the effect of: "Found Money on Friday afternoon. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx, identify amount to claim. If not claimed by Christmas will donate to my church."

Has anyone been in this situation before? How did you handle it? This is New York after all and part of me doesn't want to deal with all of the potential fraudsters. I should just donate it straight away, but I really want to make sure it gets back to its rightful owner.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

"then you get to keep it..."

Keep What? Cash?

Municipals deposit such found/confiscated money as noted may times here in FR over the years.

You would have to petition (sue) the municipal for payment (city check or draft of check) and add a few IRS forms.

I found about 50 bucks on a job site once. I called a meeting of all my guys, I had about 15 working for me, and told them I had found something, and if they had lost something, to tell me what it was. Nobody did, and before the day was out, I discovered that I was the one who originally lost the money.

My daughter picked up a little wad of five twenties on the sidewalk one time. There was a man walking toward us who saw her pick it up and the thought seemed to cross his mind to claim it was his, but he thought better of it--or knew he couldn't get away with it. It didn't occur to me to post a notice somehow on that corner. Really. It didn't!

Give it to the local police dept. If they return it after the required number of days, then donate it if you still wish. What I would do.

Just my two cents. :-)

If it's totally without clues as to who dropped it, a flyer seems like a fair shot to return it to a grateful owner, if they even know to go back there and look. Might also make a notification to the administration or lost and found or security of the place you found it.

We FReepers charge consulting fees to help you.

The total EXACTLY matches the amount you found. Please send to FR to continue operations.

Thanks.

Use every last dollar taking out advertisements in every newspaper in the area trying to find the owner. If it's a large amount, try television or radio advertisements. Sure all the cash will be gone, but at least the owner will have the piece of mind knowing that it went into the hands of an honest person! :)

"Donate it to the Federal Government with your next tax return."

Knowing the IRS, they'd probably fine him for not reporting it as income before he donated it.

If you have any toll roads, keep driving through the toll station, and tip the people in the booths.
