NEED ADVICE: Found Money (vanity)
12/9/05 | NYCynic

Posted on 12/09/2005 2:58:01 PM PST by NYCynic

After work this afternoon I found a small wad of cash on the train platform. I was thinking of putting up a flyer that says something to the effect of: "Found Money on Friday afternoon. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx, identify amount to claim. If not claimed by Christmas will donate to my church."

Has anyone been in this situation before? How did you handle it? This is New York after all and part of me doesn't want to deal with all of the potential fraudsters. I should just donate it straight away, but I really want to make sure it gets back to its rightful owner.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

If it is a significant amount, do the flyer.
If not, keep it and buy your wife a gift.
It's kind-of like donating it to the church.

So that's one in favor of going the Cleaver route.

If you have a PO Box, put up a sign saying "write and tell me how much you lost and where."

Maybe you could check with the police at the nearest station to get their advice how to handle it.

If you'd like to donate it to a worthy cause, I suggest Sean Hannity's fund to provide college scholarships to the children of troops killed in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

Merry Christmas, and God Bless.

leave contact info with authorities at train station.

Bears repeating..that's the suggestion that makes sense.

I would watch in the LOST column of the newspaper and see if anyone gives an exact time, exact amount, and trust your gut. Otherwise keep it for all of those times YOU lost money you never got back. Remember you ARE in NYC and it is CHRISTMAS. Not Winter Holidays, or Seasons Greetings...Time to receive and gift a gift...That is where the tradition began.

I recall a great line from a Honeymooner episode:

Ralph finds a suitcase with a million dollars. Some concern arises about the person who lost it. Ralph says its probably some millionaire... and they probably havn't noticed its missing. Norton's retort is: "I'd hate to think that it was some poor and needy person who lost it"

I personally could never do that. Just this morning somebody under charged me for my coffee and paper by 25 cents, I held up the line of people making sure she rung it up correctly. I may be poor but never poor enough to keep what isnt mine or shortshift somebody.

Only put your number up if you want to spend the next few months, or however long it takes to get your number changed, fielding calls from weirdos.

You could hand it over to the police and let them deal with it. If you turn it in to lost and found it is just going to go into someone's pocket. (probably the same if you hand it over to the police yes I am a cynic)

If it's less than $100, I'd make some less fortunate kids happy at Christmas.

Finder's Keepers, Looser's Weepers.

How often have you lost a "wad" of money? It doesn't happen too often. And if you really are in desperate need of it, you clutch it hard to make sure you don't lose it.

If it'll put your guilty mind to rest, do what others have suggested and drop it in the church collection plate, or the Salvation Army pot.

If not, treat yourself and yours to a nice dinner. Give the waitress/waiter a nice Christmas tip.

The flyer is a good idea, but don't say money. Just say you found a small something-or-other (bundle, rolled up belongings) that may be needed for Christmas and where it was.

That's a good idea, thanks. And thanks to everyone else who posted as well.

May God bless you.

Spend other peoples money of failed social programs.

It's the liberal NYer way!

After all, anyone with money doesn't really earn that money, right?

Happened to me twice in my life. Once in a store - I found the store manager, explained the circumstances, etc. He said, "Thanks," and put the cash in his pocket.

I assume it stayed there.

The second time, it was in our office parking lot - I sent out a global email, "cash found, identify amount, it's yours." Two weeks later I donated it to a good cause.
