Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last nights episode of South Park (it will run again for the next three nights):
A South Park character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings. Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him. The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is bleeding out her ass. The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people. The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.
Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate. He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. A reporter says, The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina. To which the pope replies: A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle. Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.
Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom. On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter. We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter. We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD. In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation. We are asking our members to contact him as well. Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.
Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, employment@casacolumbia.org.
This was the point I was trying to make. I don't care for when they bash my faith, but they're pretty much an equal opportunity offender...and it's a sure bet that they're not going to apologize.
BEsides the IDolators that flock to any percieived image of the virgin are really over the top and give Catholics a bad name and that's the crowd they were going after primarily, even though it splashed on all.
I'm often surprised at the vigor that some defend the flocking to idols of various sorts that some catholics I've encountered employ.
Can you imagine the reaction if the Koran or Muhammad had been defiled or even remotely criticized?
But again it raised moral questions. For a show that has been pretty consistantly anti-bortion, it presented as praiseworthy the mountian lion cubs learning how to abort the Antichrist.
Sadly, ever since the Terri Schiavo episode, FR has become home for thought police as much as any Democrat site. If you don't spew their single-issue line, you're obviously not good enough to be a Republican /sarcasm.
There was definitely an implied insult to Mary, and the Catholic church: the statue did not "appear" to bleed, it spouted blood profusely, with farting noises, into the face of the pope.
A first-order relic is an actual piece of a saint (or Christ, if one existed). A second-order relic is something the saint or Christ wore or used during his lifetime. A third-order relic is something that has touched a first- or second-order relic.
Thus, the cross should technically be a second-order relic, the Shroud of Turin third-order.
THat goes to the heart of what Stan said in the episode about drinking alcohol. Either too much drinking or no drinking at al are both unnatural extremes. He quotes his karate teacher and said his dad needed "disiprine." I agree. It is a matter of self discipline and that is something that, today, many people lack.
What's shocking to me is that at post 382 you're the first person to bring that up. Do you imagine they're too scared to insult the Koran or Mohammud? Or are they just too PC?
Kyle actually did have the Jew gold.
My sentiments exactly. Love the show but changed the channel at that point.
bttt
I'll ask you since the other one is now off holding someone's coat ... What was the insult to the Virgin Mary?
I think it was brought up earlier in the thread somewhere.
Are you sure they don't insult Islam or Mohammed? What about Team America?
You didn't see the Osama Bin Laden episode?
Note to self: Religion - freaky
Internet chat forums are like private clubs. Ridiculing religious beliefs (veiled as satire) on public TV is different.
You have a good point. Jesus is portrayed regularly as a minor character with a barely watched call-in show on cable community access.
The Virgin Mary is the mother of God. It has nothing to do with being Catholic. South Park is insulting God's mother
As a Roman Catholic (and not a watcher of South Park), I have just one thing to say...That sounds like a hoot!
I'm Christian but not Catholic and it was definitely an insult to Mary to have her bleeding "OUT OF HER ASS", which they repeated over and over.
The people who replied that it wasn't an insult are flat out wrong.
