Yesterday my husband and I were doing some errands. We were stopped at a red light and woman in a truck pulled up beside us, but just a little ahead. On her back window was a sticker that said, "I f#$%ed your boyfriend." (it was written out, no symbols like I just did) She also had several other offensive stickers, but that one was by far the worst. When the light turned green we got up beside her, my husband honked several times to get her attention but she wouldn't look at us. She finally did and I mouthed "you pig" at her. I'm just glad I didn't have my 5 kids with me, included my 6 year old who likes to read everything she sees, out loud.

Stop throwing read herrings out. The word in question is clearly regarded as obscene. There's no question of a matter of taste. If you wish to argue that the community standards have dropped to the point that the F word is considered part of normal discourse and its use around and among children is just fine, have that argument.
I don't think a substantial portion of the population would agree that the F word has reached a mainstream, "no big deal" point. Nor would they want it to.
Curse words are pwoerful because of their power to shock or convey strong emotion. As a reflex utterance, they lose meaning.

A few years ago I was stuck behind a young woman who was going slower than the speed limit. She knew it, and was doing all that she could to irritate me. When I was finally able to pass her car, just as I was passing her I looked over at her, she was pointing a camera at me. I can only guess that she had planned to take of picture of me if I had flipped her the bird, and then get my license plate number. I just smiled at her.

We could play this game with dozens of words, actually, and pretend to find the line. But that isn't really the point.
I stated quite plainly what I would consider obscene regarded one's clothing. Pubic hair, genitals or anus showing would, in my opinion, be considered unacceptable in public. A woman walking through the mall topless would also be considered obscene. No one has the right to decide for me what my children should be exposed to, with regards to what most people would consider obscenity.
My favorite argument. Do you plan to attend every public event with your vulnerable children as well, so as to sheild their virgin ears?
If you have done your job as a parent well, your kids will know what is right and what is wrong. But to attempt to shield them from words is just silly.
Ok, I'll bite, what is the point then?
yes, a report of an offensive bumper sticker might not go anywhere soon if sent through a non emergency channel, but it might also free up valuable emergency resources.
Quick question, Tuffy. How old are your children?
I will protect my children for as long as I can in any way needed.
My kids like to see me fight for what is right. I saw a woman in a parking lot dragging her very small child (under 2 yo) and jerking her around. I jumped out of the car and told her to stop it. My kids were cheering my actions, they were horrified by the treatment of the baby.
6, 10, 12, 15 and 16.
Yes. Those pesky "people" again, getting in the way of your glorious ideology. Obviously, we need a whole new type of "people."

Oh. Okay. Well, I can guarantee you the 16 year old has heard, and possibly said worse.
My argument would have been that if your children were of small age, they should be restrained in a back seat where they wouldn't be able to see the bumper stickers to begin with. Not to have a runaway thread, but that's my pet peeve, those parents and GRANDPARENTS that endanger children by allowing them on the front seat unsecured, or even worse, on a lap.
Honestly, TD, I get offended by a lot of things as well, so I feel your pain. But a bumper sticker is just a piece of paper stuck to a car. How do you think I felt when I saw a person driving around with 5 pro-life stickers that had their kid SLEEPING on the deck behind the back seat (you know, that area where people keep a box of tissues - I don't know the automobile language for it). Now THAT is something to call 911 about. Negligence that can result in death is one thing. Being a sarcastic idiot is another. I tend to just laugh at the latter.

Just my opinion, but by walking away from things that are clearly wrong, I feel that it gives tacit approval. (my kids were not with me when we saw the stickers, by the way)
If you are worried about unsecured children in cars, perhaps you should start a new thread. I'd be more than happy to give my 2 cents worth on that one!
