Yesterday my husband and I were doing some errands. We were stopped at a red light and woman in a truck pulled up beside us, but just a little ahead. On her back window was a sticker that said, "I f#$%ed your boyfriend." (it was written out, no symbols like I just did) She also had several other offensive stickers, but that one was by far the worst. When the light turned green we got up beside her, my husband honked several times to get her attention but she wouldn't look at us. She finally did and I mouthed "you pig" at her. I'm just glad I didn't have my 5 kids with me, included my 6 year old who likes to read everything she sees, out loud.
Front line of the Culture War.
Other parents, give me your opinion. Would you have done anything in this situation?
I would have done the same thing. If the kids were with us, I would have had to bit my lip. What was the woman's response?
Unless you are ready for a possible fatal confrontation it is best to refrain from mouthing insults or giving one finger salutes to complete strangers.
We still have an obscene-language-in-public law around here.
My kids are now 15 and 17, but I might still have them print in childish letters something like "POTTY MOUTH" (what I used to tell them when they used bad words) and hold it up for her to read. (If they were younger it would be more effective.)
I told my husband that very thing before he started honking at her. He was so mad he said he didn't care, he also had a gun.
Her response was to just look away.
What a skank.
Dang it, I wish I would have gotten her license tag!
Calling the cops would have been good but since most are stretched thin, I doubt they would have pursued it unless they were right there.
Our highways right now are crawling with cops and State Patrol enforcing the seat belt law. There would probably be one within 200 yards.
Ild be very angry my husband has a boyfriend
Ever since the days of "Sh*T Happens" and "If you don't like my driving call 1-800-EAT-SH*T" I have wondered at the self-centeredness of people who use such bumper stickers and at the impotence of a society which doesn't shame them out of it.
Mind you, in my days as a sheep farmer I did sell a variety of Bumper Stickers of which one said "Sheep Happens" ...
The most offensive bumper stickers to me are the ones that say "Kerry" or "Gore".
I'm not a big bumper sticker person - other than my dog club badges and my high school alumni fund sticker, there's nothing on my car. I tend to have T-shirts with stuff on them rather than bumper stickers.
No old Kerry stickers? Surprising.
LOL...I don't believe I would have reacted like you did for several reasons, not the least is because she might have shot you:)
Seriously, another reason I would not have reacted at all, is people who parade that type of stuff ENJOY reactions such as yours. That is exactly what those types of things are meant to do, outrage someone into a response. If you just ignore them, people will be more apt to give that sort of thing up because it didn't generate reactions.
As far as if your kids had seen it. IMO, as nasty as the world has become, kids need to be exposed to that nastiness and be taught by the example of their parents how to handle it. And that the best way to handle it is ignore, ignore, ignore. It would have been a good time to teach your children about bad language and how inconsiderate it is to others to use it. If kids can read that sort of stuff, then they need to be prepared how to deal with it when mom isn't there.
JMO:)
