Columbus- Ohio State senior linebacker Bobby Carpenter does not know if he will play in the Fiesta Bowl after breaking his right fibula against Michigan.

Speaking for the first time since the injury, Carpenter said Sunday he did not need surgery, but the 6-to-8 week recovery time puts the final game of his career on the edge of his timetable.

The Fiesta Bowl will be played on Jan. 2, 44 days after the Buckeyes' 25-21 win over Michigan.

Carpenter began walking without crutches only in the past few days, while still wearing a protective boot. He not only has the Fiesta Bowl to consider, but the NFL combine in late February. Carpenter is expected to be picked in the first three rounds of April's NFL draft.

I don't think he should play and they should hold him out. The game means nothing. He has his NFL career to look forward too.....

BTW look for him to go (assuming he's healthy) last 1st or early 2nd round. He will be a Defensive End in the NFL.

There is no way the leg will up to normal strength in time. If he makes it at all, he will play lousy and put himself at risk.

yeah....

now if he can practice, that's one thing, but playing in the game should be out of the question.

Belichick loves players like that.

he could very well go to someone like NE.

He is very comparable to what Mike Vrabel was when he left Ohio State so there is a history there.....

it depends on his combine. If he has a good one, he might go 1st round and NE probably won't have a shot at him. If he doesn't and drops, NE might have a shot at him in the 2nd or 3rd rounds....

I just hope he works out better than the Big Kat did.

probably...

first of all, Carpenter actually tackles, he doesn't just bump people down with his head like Katzenmoyer did...

And he won't balloon up after the draft like Kat did. Bobby is too smart to do that. His dad was in the NFL, so I am sure he will be getting advice from his old man too.

How do you think OSU will fare without him?

He seems to be an intelligent player as well. So many college specimens can't make it in the NFL because they don't have it upstairs.

I think they will be ok.

If Notre Dame comes out throwing, Carpenter would have ended up as the 4th down lineman playing end anyway, so they will continue to play with Schlegel and Hawk and probably Lauranitis if they need him.

Lauranitis played great against Michigan as a true freshman so I can't tell you how much of a drop off there really is yet.

So on a third and six they might just be looking out for a screen pass,

I guess this wasn't about Karen's brother.

I really should read the story first.

yeah....

Hawk broke up 3 or 4 screens by Michigan....and he and Schelegel were all over the place against Northwestern, who throws A LOT of screens and bubble passes

A good trait in a linebacker. The ones that overreact on the first movement they see get eaten alive by NFL coordinators.

yeah.

I am sure they will do that some next year, but as a Rookie and your name isn't Urlacher, you are supposed to over-pursue :)

It's amazing how much defenders can screw up an offensive play by just not being moved.
