Word For The Day, Wednesday, December 7, 2005 - malversation
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 12/07/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 12/07/2005 6:09:18 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

malversation \mal-ver-SAY-shun\ noun

1. misbehavior and especially corruption in an office, trust, or commission *
2. corrupt administration

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

A picture of bill clinton appears next to this word in the dictionary

Example sentence:
The governor was finally convicted of malversation, after years of rumors about kickbacks and illegal contracts.

Did you know?
The form "mal-" is often a bad sign in a word, and "malversation" is no exception. In Middle French, "mal-" (meaning "bad," from the Latin word for "bad," "malus") teamed up with "verser" ("to turn, handle," from the Latin verb "vertere," "to turn ") to create "malverser," a verb meaning "to be corrupt." This in turn led to "malversation," which was adopted by English speakers in the mid-16th century. Some other "mal-" descendants are "maladroit" ("inept"), "malcontent" ("discontented"), and "maltreat" ("to treat badly").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Well, maybe one day I'll have a crack at it. If I only didn't have a bedroom filled with unread books. Thanks!

You turned out pretty well, Miss Salamander.

I rarely read it, but that funny happened to be in one issue I read and my Alzheimered brain has actually not deleted that particular remembrance yet.

It's not as bad as it sounds....;))

You just have to accept that you're marching through an ideological minefield and learn to enjoy the rest of the scenery.

[whilst simultaneously watching your step]...;]

It sounds like you live in Shangri-la, with weather like that-it sounds almost magical.

Same here.
Every dry tome I've bought in hard copy is far exceeded in content by what's available free on the net.

Oh, the money I could've saved....:))

Well, I haven't been committed yet so I reckon I'm not doing *too* badly...;)

I wish I'd kept all my NLs from the 70s/80s.

Some of the stuff [especially that which was written by PJ O'Rourke] is so funny it's actually literally painful to read....;D

I moved here in 1999. One winter the only snow we had was two light snowfalls, and another winter we had an ice storm one day in November and that was it! (Last year we had driving snow from Christmas to New Year's, a disaster around here. I, being an Easterner, rather enjoyed it, especially since I was on vacation those days and didn't have to go to work in it.)

Gabz's chicken and mushroom recipe is about to get yet another variation at our house tonight-I had a package of fresh mushrooms that I got on Monday and a package of frozen chicken breast fillets, but I didn't have any cream of mushroom soup and didn't want to stop on the way home for fear of being overrun by the bad weather. I did, however, have a couple of cans of golden mushroom soup in the pantry. I've thawed the fillets, put them and the sliced mushrooms in a baking dish, added some chopped onions, minced garlic and spices, mixed a can of the soup with some chardonnay, and poured it over the whole thing. I've covered it up, and will pop it in the oven in about 45 minutes. I'll let you know if hubby likes it or not-he will usually eat just about anything as long as there is enough garlic and onions in it...

It is 32 now, overcast, and the wind is whipping up rollers from north to south across the water below the cliff-a day like this can almost make me wish for summer...

Golden mushroom soup is how my grandmother and mother used to fix it :)

Hubby and Jax have a choice for dinner tonight - all leftovers: rotini and meatsauce, ham and bean soup; or the rest of last night's chicken..........I'll be eating at the Lodge, which I have to leave for for bingo in 15 minutes.

We took a ride late this morning to get a truckload of firewood, and he took me out for lunch, so I'm not all that hungry anyway.

tell hubby to come to my house tonight, i am making CABBAGE with kielbassa. the kids asked for kielbassa the way i used to make it for their bday parties when they were small, as an appetizer, sliced with honey drizzled over it and then baked. i had completely forgotten about that since we hardly ever entertain any more but xsteen asked for it. so i am making it for dinner instead of as an appetizer, with mac and cheese from a box for them : ) i better cook something for xshub as it will be his last meal for awhile. tomorrow he begins the liquid diet for his colonoscopy which is friday. poor thang.

The conversation of malservation revolves around "Gimme."

Late, sidetracked, home sick, but I did finally think of something...
