Word For The Day, Wednesday, December 7, 2005 - malversation
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 12/07/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

malversation \mal-ver-SAY-shun\ noun

1. misbehavior and especially corruption in an office, trust, or commission *
2. corrupt administration

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

A picture of bill clinton appears next to this word in the dictionary

Example sentence:
The governor was finally convicted of malversation, after years of rumors about kickbacks and illegal contracts.

Did you know?
The form "mal-" is often a bad sign in a word, and "malversation" is no exception. In Middle French, "mal-" (meaning "bad," from the Latin word for "bad," "malus") teamed up with "verser" ("to turn, handle," from the Latin verb "vertere," "to turn ") to create "malverser," a verb meaning "to be corrupt." This in turn led to "malversation," which was adopted by English speakers in the mid-16th century. Some other "mal-" descendants are "maladroit" ("inept"), "malcontent" ("discontented"), and "maltreat" ("to treat badly").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yes..It is always good to have a little illumination thrown on
how little one actually knows, let alone understands....

It's a great dissertation on the whole primitive concept of boobs/butts/etc and the symbolism/significance/obsession thereof.

It's a not-too-dry anthropological masterpiece....:)

National Lampoon addressed that very issue.

Hilariously, I might add....;D

The anniversay of "A day that will live in infamy".

The conspiracy theories get wilder
Among the loonies and 'rats
Their imaginations have taken control
As they don their tinfoil hats

They think the government planned 9-11
And Iraq is an imperial act-
But Murtha and Dean are traitors
And that is an absolute fact

I wish they'd just shut up and go
Drink their koolaid and chill-
Where was all their hysteria during
The malversation of Hillary and Bill?

Thank you. I thought it was a piece of feminist claptrap propaganda. Shows what I know.

My favourite bit from the National Lampoon was a letter to the editor back in the 70's:

Dear Sirs,

If I'm so smart, how come I'm dead?

Yours truly,

Albert Einstein

Well, I got home just ahead of the norther-the wind is picking up from the north and it has dropped from 50 to 35 in just under an hour. I brought in enough wood to fill the wood holder to overflowing for this evening/night, and I'm doing invoices. What is the weather like where you are?

Cloudy, a touch windy, about 40 F. The town (Tsawwassen, pronounced surprisingly tuh-WAW-sen by the locals) I live in south of Vancouver reputedly gets the best weather in Canaduh. It's due to the warming current in the Pacific along with the somewhat freakish effect of its location vis-a-vis the mountain islands just off the coast. Sometimes it's raining all around here, but you can see a big oval space in the clouds over our town, where the rain will not be falling.

A good line from this article: "Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney said: "Christmas is not politically incorrect and there is only a small group in the population that believe it is – and they're nuts."

It *sort* of is but if you disregard the defensive posturing and agonistic semantics, the anthropological insights are really quite good.

"defensive posturing and agonistic semantics, the anthropological insights "

Yikes, I am staying far away from any book that can be described in those terms.
