Library Worker Suspended for Putting Squirrel before Job
American Library Association ^ | December 5, 2005

A staffer at the LaPorte County (Ind.) Public Library’s Coolspring branch received a one-week suspension for spending too much time attempting to rescue a squirrel trapped in the library’s ceiling. Cindee Goetz said in the December 1 Michigan City (Ind.) News-Dispatch that when a company hired by the library switched from using a non-kill trap to a kill trap, she asked a friend who owns a humane animal-removal business to capture the squirrel. Goetz said she was then suspended without pay for “not giving the library its just due.” She told the newspaper, “They said I went around the chain of command” and that “I was paying more attention to the animal than I was my job.”

Library Executive Director Judy Hamilton told American Libraries she couldn’t comment on the suspension, stating only that there have been other similar problems with Goetz. “This is not an isolated incident,” she said. “If it had been an isolated incident, the reaction would have been different.”

Last year Goetz, a clerical assistant II, kept an abandoned bird in a garage at the branch and took care of it on her work breaks. The News-Dispatch reported she was reprimanded but not suspended for that incident.

Goetz, who owns an animal shelter, said she feels library officials are indifferent to animals, adding that although the squirrel isn’t someone’s pet, it deserved to get out of the library alive. “I don’t want that squirrel to die, either, but I can’t allow a live animal to be headquartered in that building,” Hamilton told the newspaper. “It’s a severe situation I can’t ignore. I’m not running a squirrel condominium here.”

Squirrel invasion continues! I'd for sure thought this latest squirrel story would have been posted.

It sounds like Judy has an "I am the Boss" chip on her shoulders. She cares more about her power trip then for a helpless animal. Why didn't she explore the no kill way of saving this squirrel? I hope animal lovers back Ms. Goetz. It sounds like the previous "incident" caused no harm or time from work. Most likely Ms. Goetz found an injured bird near the library and simply watched over it on her breaks until she was off duty and could take it to someone who rehabilitates animals. She is being penalized because she has a heart for animals.

Let me see if I understand this. A librarian is suspended for a week for taking too long chase a squirrel from a library, right? Then what would be the suspension time for allowing a six year old child to view p**nography on an unfiltered public library computer? See "No Smut At Work, Please for the answer, but here is the key phrase:
[T]he administration was so loath to interfere with the viewing choices of its patrons that it chastised a security guard for telling a 6-year-old boy that he shouldn't be looking at p**nography.
Remember, we are talking about an organization, the American Library Association, whose de facto leader, Judith Krug, said:
Parents who care give their children Playboy.

it's a "handle it" situation. The 6 year old had no business on a porn site in the library (actually the library has no business carrying a website with porn), nor should she be wasting anytime with a squirrel.

“I don’t want that squirrel to die, either, but I can’t allow a live animal to be headquartered in that building,” Hamilton told the newspaper. “It’s a severe situation I can’t ignore. I’m not running a squirrel condominium here.”

I had a squirrel get loose in a hunting camp and failed to act immediately. Ended up leaving antifreeze in low cut cups inside the cupboards (only the animals that needed to die would be exposed to the risk) and got all four of them, but not before they almost destroyed the place.

I shoot squirrels with a .177 caliber airgun from my attic window. Because they destroy my siblings' garden, and chew up anything made of rope that is left outside for more than a day. And they hide in the treetops and throw nuts at me whenever I go out. This lady has been aiding and abetting the enemy. No sympathy.

Guess this makes the library officials feel like Goliaths for once in their puny lives by firing a clerical assistant.
