This is done more often than is reported... this is why RFID is such a key to the retail future.

In related news, another brilliant college student downloaded news stories about bank robberies and then attempted to rob his local bank. When caught he swore he would "NEVER EVER DO IT AGAIN." With that sort of promise, how could the police press charges? So they released him. /sarc

I did this not knowing of the serious penalty that lies behind it.Ah, the old "ignorance of the law" plea. I wonder how that will work out for him.
What a stupid plan in the first place.
Even a pretty dumb clerk will usually notice that the season's hottest item that normally costs 149.99 shouldn't be ringing up as 4.99.

I did this not knowing of the serious penalty that lies behind it. That is, he's not "terribly sorry" that he did it -- just "terribly sorry" that he got CAUGHT.

I say no mercy. A man smart enough to change a barcode is smart enough to know the seriousness of the crime he committed.
Throw the book at him!
And what was he thinking? That a checkout clerk was dumb enough to not question a $4.99 iPod?
