Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull-rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.

Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house......

More on the Dogs of Peace...

I would surely like to see Pit Bulls, Rotts, and some other breeds outlawed, as much as that will chap the fannies of some.

My neighbor had a Rottweiler and I couldn't even walk over to that edge of my own property. Finally figured out that if I brought my Lab with me all was OK, the Rott had a belief system that all dog owners were good people. The only good thing is that they have short lifetimes and it passed away .

Charge the owners/breeders with homicide, criminally and civilly. Take every penny, jail them.

In the county where I'm living right now, you can't own a pit bull that was born after 1997. That's a good way to handle it - you don't take anybody's pet away from them but you can be rid of the problem of these singularly vicious dogs over time.

The reasoning behind not allowing citizens to keep lions should be applied to pit bulls as well. There are some that are docile but on the whole their instinct is to maul and kill. Holding the owners of such dogs responsible doesn't resurrect the dead.

Yep, horrible. Seems clear the law has to go after the owner with both barrels in this case.

But I don't agree with those who want to outlaw Pitbulls and Rottweilers. Seems to me that's the same mentality that wants to outlaw .50 cal rifles. Pretty soon we'll all be stuck owning nothing more powerful than .22 single shot rifles and walking around with little ratdogs that Za Za Gabor would be embarrassed to be seen with.

Agreed. But if your dog gets loose, joins a pack and kills somebody, you gotta pay, just as if you left a loaded and cocked gun on the school playground.

Absolutely! Way too many irresponsible dog owners out there.

About 10 years ago I had a real scare one day when I heard my German Shepherd going crazy in the backyard. I looked out the window and there was some stupid *@$^&@@#! illegal-alien-type woman holding her infant son over the fence (teasing my dog with it), then pulling it back just as my dog would lunge at it, snarling and snapping away.

The baby was absolutely terrified, screaming and crying his head off. She managed to do this several times before I got down there and ran out into the backyard bellowing at her, then she scurried off. Obviously, she thought it was a whole bunch of fun.

But I'm sure my dog would've been put to sleep if he had gotten ahold of that kid, and my wife and I would've been sued senseless by the mother, who naturally would've denied my version of events. Un-f'n-believable!

O.K. if your pit bull mauls your neighbor I'll hold you for
murder or attempted murder. Pit Bulls are'nt guns! This breed of creature has a tempermental mind. I Never saw a gun run to someone and shoot them.

Pit Bulls are useless.
There is a boy here in Illinois going on 8 weeks in intensive care because his wacko neighbor's Pit Bulls decided to have him for lunch. They were trained. Yeah, right.

If a felon cannot own a gun why can't we have special licensing for dangerous breeds of animals.

My family has raised Rotts since I was a kid.

I have personally raised two "rescued" Rotts and will argue their viability everyday.
When I "adopted" my Rotts - they were a mess. With some quality training - they became terrific pets and protectors.

I have never raised a Pit - but will swear by a Rottweiler's ability to be trained as a terrific partner.

Maybe we should. I wouldn't have a problem with that. I think many, many of these problem dogs are owned by irresponsible low-lifes anyway.

If I'm being a responsible owner, then by definition, there is no way my dog should get ahold of one of the neighbor's kids (unless he's being dangled over the fence by his mother, lol).

In ten years my dog got out twice and I admit it was my fault. Fortunately, he didn't hurt anybody and I retrieved him real fast. The first time he went through the fence like it wasn't even there, going after some cat that came into the backyard (I've since re-inforced the fence). The second time he got out when a meter reader left the gate open (I fixed that problem real fast too).

My dogs aren't mean because I take good care of them and don't mistreat or neglect them. But you can never be "100% certain" that they won't bite someone unless you are 100% certain that they can't get out. That's the way I look at it, and I've had no problems with them.

As far as the gun analogy goes, I think it fits because in the case of the gun, gun grabbers look at the gun as the main problem, when actually it is the owner who's the problem. Same with the dog. IMHO.

I meant to say that maybe we should have licensing and/or other restrictions FOR FELONS, not for law-abiding citizens.

I hear 'ya... Just don't understand it... Everyone should love dogs! What's not to love -- Loyalty, beauty, sweet fun-loving personalities, unconditional love, lifelong devotion, etc.?

Not like those treacherous cats. j/k

I'm in 100% agreement with you on that one. My sister in law just got a Rottie pup (after her other Rottie died at 14 years of age), and both dogs were/are amongst the most gentle dogs I've ever seen; it's all in how you train them. If it weren't for their large size, I would not hesitate to get a Rottie.
