The Red Sox and Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez, right-handed prospect Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher.
The deal is contingent on the finalization of paperwork and all players passing physicals, sources outside the Red Sox organization have told ESPN's Peter Gammons. An official announcement is not expected for a day or two, which leaves open the possibility that it could still fall apart, Gammons said on SportsCenter.
Only some last-minute haggling over dollars appeared to be holding up the deal, a baseball official with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Florida would include cash in the trade to offset some of the $18 million owed to Lowell over the next two seasons.
In return, the Red Sox would give up Ramirez, their much-ballyhooed shortstop prospect, and Sanchez. The Marlins originally had targeted left-hander Jon Lester, but Boston balked at including him in the trade, so the Red Sox agreed to add a second minor leaguer if Florida took Sanchez instead, Stark reports.

Beckett went 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA last season, when he had problems with his shoulder and recurring blisters on his right middle finger.
Lowell hit .236 with eight homers and 58 RBI while winning the NL Gold Glove at third base last season. He averaged 24 homers and 94 RBI per season in the five years before that.
Beckett is expected to earn between $4 million and $5 million next season.

Heard that. I'd love to pry Yusmeiro Petit away from the Mets. A 2007 (or 2008) starting rotation of Beckett/Papelbon/Lester/E. Martinez/Petit would be deadly. Deadly.

But Beckett is not somebody you dump if you actually want to win, not when he only makes 3 million, is 25 years old, and still has two years left before he becomes a free agent.
He's making $5 million this year and with arbitration he is likely to see about $7 million in 2007.
Florida is not interested in winning now. They want out of Miami and gutting the team will help them with that.
Play Papi at 1B more and you'll piss away some of his production at the plate. Part of the reason he broke out when he came to Boston was because he DHed and didn't have to sweat playing the field. His knees didn't have to take the extra punishment.
Our pitching staff is getting much younger---a 25 year old power pitcher is about the most valuable thing in beisbol.
He's basicly the same age as Papelbon. Two great, young arms.
Yup, and if Schil can put it together next season, that means we could have three power pitchers in our starting rotation next year.

The future is ..... well, it's out there in the future somewhere, and tends to stay there, being the future and all, which is why you don't want to count on it being there and why if you've got $13M/yr to pay an established 25-year-old starter (and his 3B sidekick) you do it.
You tell Papi to his face that he can't produce and play in the field.
Something I've yet to see on this or ANY board regarding the trade, which HAS to be a big consideration.
For all of Beckett's downsides, there is the MAJOR upside to him of having the bulldog of bulldogs out there mentoring him, one Mr. Curt Schilling!
Somewhere in my house I have a picture I got in late 1986 or early 1987, of another young power pitcher for the Red Sox being mentored by a great and grizzled veteran of the pitching wars. The kid was some guy name of Roger, the veteran none other than Tom Seaver. I can see a similar picture with Beckett and Schilling next year, and Beckett reaching his potential with that little extra push!
Red Sox will keep Damon.

From what I read, Wells to SD is almost done. Manny wants out and says he won't report to Red Sox spring training. Finally Damon wants 7 years $85 mil which the Sox will (should) never give him.
Manny always wants out. In the end, he'll be in Boston for 06. Pappy may talk some sense into him.
