Transforming Talladega: Track to get fresh coat of asphalt

ThatsRacin.com Report

Talladega Superspeedway announced Thursday that the 2.66-mile track will be completely repaved with asphalt after next April's race and will be done in time for next year's UAW-Ford 500 in October. The track hasn't been repaved since 1979. "Twenty-six years has certainly been a long time to go without necessitating a project this extensive, so there is no question that the time has come for us to repave," track president Grant Lynch said. "It will ensure that Talladega Superspeedway continues to uphold its reputation for the most exciting, most competitive racing throughout the entire NASCAR circuit for years to come.
"If our track history is any indication, it will increase the level of competitiveness. The first race held here after our last repaving project was one of the most exciting on the record books."

A portable asphalt plant will be moved to track grounds this month, with working beginning in February. Trial batches of asphalt will be tested on speedway property before on-track work begins.

I'll take 2 right-sides and a half-round down on the wedge.

(Word via Jayski, commentary mine because he's too hard on himself) - NASCAR changed their minds (again) on the guaranteed spots for the first 5 races. If the dissolved #77 (34th in the final 2005 owners' points) stays dissolved, the #4 (36th in 2005 owners' points) WILL GET the 35th and last guaranteed spot. Take THAT, Kodak.

Meanwhile, the Jayski news-and-rumor mill is alive and kicking -

And finally, USA Today has an interesting analysis on crashes in NASCAR last year (sorry I can't say more or even provide a link, but that's Gannett's fault - you can get there through Jayski).

I was wondering why Hamilton's name was still on the 32 team roster. Thanks for answering that.

I did see the accident report but didn't post it for two reasons, the one you gave and I didn't see which 30 races they took that from. I'm thinking it must have been 05 since the #8 car was on that list. I don't remember him having that many problems previously.

Per Jayski
* Kenny Wallace to run some Cup races in 2006: Kenny Wallace says that he will run several Nextel Cup races in 2006. “I am going to run for sure the first five races of year in the #78 Furniture Row Racing Cup car. (Team owner) Joe Garone has asked me to run as many Cup races as I can this year. Furniture Row Racing had decided to quit running in the NASCAR Busch Series, and they will put all their effort into a Cup team. It is their decision to do this.”(Kenny Wallace site)(12-17-2005)

I think the handwriting was on the wall when they started talking about pulling out of Indy.

Yep. Looks as though the open wheel series(s) are in a bad state of affairs.
