Matchmakers, unfortunately, often have no idea what they're talking about. They'll set you up with the most disastrously wrong person imaginable.

Hmmm, that is something to research. I think the gist is that many women were younger than the men because the idea was that the men had to take time and build a career and a nest egg before getting married and then when they were ready, the local matchmaker hooked them up with a prospect or two. I know David Sarnoff, who founded NBC and RCA was around his 30's (or around there) when he was matched with a young lady as well.
