WWE reports Eddie Guerrero found dead

By COREY DAVID LACROIX -- SLAM! Wrestling

WWE.com is reporting today that Eddie Guerrero was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis, MN.

No cause of death has been reported, Guerrero is survived by his wife Vickie and two daughters.

Guerrero had an absolutely stellar wrestling career, marked by his ability to deliver athletically competent, emotional, and ultimately awe inspiring performances in the ring. At the same time, it seemed he was constantly fending off his own personal demons in the form of alcohol and drug dependency. Those struggles were immortalized in the released DVD Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story.

SLAM! Wrestling will have more as this story develops.

What ever happened to Stone Cold? (I haven't watched wrestling since the WCW went away).

I think he's back, but I'm not sure for how long, or what the current storyline is. I quit watching WWF regularly around the end of 2001, but I've begun to occasionally look at it again.

As far as the end of WCW, without some serious competition, how can Vince be forced to pursue new and interesting storylines? If it wasn't for the nWo saga, Vince wouldn't have gotten the motivation to get then-morbid WWF back into shape. Then again, stretching the nWo storyline for too long helped kill the WCW, ironically.

>WWE reports Eddie Guerrero found dead

I found these harsh words
from former WWE star
TEST (remember him?):

"I'm actually wondering who's next? Who's next to die? I can think of at least 15 to 20 people who have died from various things - mostly prescription pain killers. For all you wanna be wrestlers who wanna get in this business, especially now when WWE doesn't pay you anymore than you would make at a 9 to 5 job, let me break some things down for you. When I started wrestling I had never seen or heard of Vicodin or Percocet or Soma. How come so many wrestlers die from these medications and football players and hockey players don't? The answer is simple - wrestlers, especially WWE wrestlers, work five days a week all year long taking bump after bump in the ring. A doctor explained it to me like this: Every time you take a fall in the ring it's like getting rear-ended by a car going 20 mph, so how many bumps in the ring a night do you take? Multiply that by how many times a week you work all year long. That's a hell of a lot of whiplash and pain. I can remember hearing a conversation from some unnamed WWE head guys talking about how this certain person needs to go to rehab but they couldn’t send him because he was to important to the show. That's the reality people that is how we are treated. Look at me. I break my neck in the ring had to have two discs taken out of my neck and a steel plate put in and was told at the time by Johnny Ace when I asked if my job would be in jeopardy, 'We don't fire people with injuries like that.' Hmm, that's funny, because two months after surgery I got fired because I wasn't working. My seven years of busting my ass for them and putting over the boss's son while my foot was broken in a cast was all forgotten about. When Johnny Ace called me and told me they were releasing me - which of course he put all the heat on Vince - I said to him, 'What kind of message are you sending the boys that if they get hurt they are going to get fired?' So all the guys who don't want to lose their jobs, what do they do? Pop a couple of Percocet or Vicodin and mask the pain because god forbid they say they are hurt and lose their job. I'm not going to name any names, but I know at least a dozen or so wrestlers who are addicted to these things for that very reason. Get hurt, lose your job. I just turned 30, my back aches everyday, I have a metal plate in my neck, and yes I got in the business at the right time and have a lot of nice things, but is it all worth it? You guys don't see the ugly side of this business. Yes, wrestling is entertainment, but the bumps and bruises are real and sometimes they don't go away. So think long and hard before you get in this business because I can tell you first hand that if you're not working or making them money they don't give a shit about you and the sad part is Eddie was clean and I guarantee he won't be the last one to die in the next 12 months. So that's why I say who's next? Don't take your life for granted it's a gift. Don't go to bed mad and tell the people you care about you love them because you never know. Take care."

Cause of death has been announced as heart diesease compounded by his past drug and alchol abuse. Good to know he had not relapsed, but somehow, that seems to just make it saddder.

Didn't know he said "glorious." I love how he waves the announcer out of the ring, who just throws up his hands. Mr. Kennedy is one of the best heels. Do you like RKO (Hey! Nothing you can say!)?

The main problem is that pro wrestlers have an unusually hard time making it past age 40. This is a serious problem that goes under the radar mostly because wrestling still has that 'carnival sideshow' image, which to be fair is somewhat legit since its history traces back through carnival sideshows.

PT Barnum, for example, was a pro wrestling promoter as part of his circus, and I have heard credited with developing predetermined endings (though no doubt that precedes him and was much more refined after him).

Read the book about the rise and fall of WCW - it's very telling and offers insight into just what a lunatic asylum WCW was.

I'm afriad that much of the WWE is a lunatic asylum, also.

Yeah I like Randy. Cowboy bob looks pretty stiff and slow though.

bob used to be a real badass and it kinda bums me out to see him in there now.

Wasn't Gino Hernandez among that bunch also? He teamed with Tully Blanchard pre WCCW.

Gino gravitated between Southwest, Florida and Mexico, I think. The talented guys like him could pretty much go where they liked in those days (pre-Vince) so long as their characters got over. Now their respective promotions try to bind them with non-competition clauses six months out so the wrestlers don't get to ride on the public's supposedly short term memories. This reeks of insecure *ssholery to me, especially considering the tennuous and wearing career path these guys go through. Vince just cut the whole Duddley crew but denied them their known ring-names despite the fact they held them before meeting him. The Dudley Boys are now Team 3-D while Spike has to wrestle under his real name.

While true talent will survive Vince McMahon's monstrous inhamanity and insensitivity will be his lasting legacy to an industry he held in his hands. Despite all of his wealth I would never want to be him.
