In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
carceral \KAHR-suh-rul\ adjective
of, relating to, or suggesting a jail or prison
Example sentence:
When James first glimpsed his new campus, he thought there was something rather carceral about the school's tall wrought-iron fence.
Etymology: Describing a painting of John Howard visiting a prison in 1787, writer Robert Hughes reminds us that Howard was "the pioneer of English carceral reform" (Time Magazine, November 11, 1985). Huges might have said "prison reform," but what about Vladimir Nabokov, when, in his inimitable prose, he describes a prison scene in Invitation to a Beheading: "The door opened, whining, rattling and groaning in keeping with all the rules of carceral counterpoint." Here we find "carceral" not only practical but practically poetical. An adjective borrowed directly from Late Latin, "carceral" appeared shortly after "incarcerate" ("to imprison"), which first showed up in English around the mid-1500s; they're both ultimately from "carcer," Latin for "prison."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

My guess is if she came on to you in a bar you would play along. Good old MODO, good for some laughs. ;)
I think she's annoy me too much. It's her personality that makes her unattractive.
I have never had nitrous oxide. Cyber swears by it.
She received her bachelor's degree at Catholic College in 1973. So she was probably born circa 1950-1953.
Mary, Mary quite contrary........you think she would have learned something from her wild ride to obscurity. She's a bitter old fool.
Gee, that makes her around my age. Yep, she's officially and old spinster.
Ordinarily, I don't need it. But my doc knew I was going to be there for a while and needed to make sure I stayed as still as possible while they were working, ergo the nitrous. I brought my MP3 player, put on the headphones, and all but dozed through it.
Jaw's still sore from all the prodding around, but it's manageable. On the whole, a very easy time of it in the chair.

Talk to the Hand: The Utter Bloody Rudeness of the World Today, or Six Good Reasons to Stay Home and Bolt the Door
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Talk to the hand, 'cause the face ain't listening," the saying goes. When did the world stop wanting to hear? When did society stop valuing basic courtesy and respect? It's a topic that has been simmering for years, and Lynne Truss says it's now reached the boiling point. Taking on the boorish behavior that for some has become a point of pride, Talk to the Hand is a rallying cry for civility.
When did "please" and "thank you" become passe"? When you call a "customer service" number, why does the burden of deciphering the automatic switchboard fall to you (and where are the real people, when you, the customer, need service)? Why do people behave as if public spaces are their own chip-strewn living rooms? Perhaps most importantly, how has it come to be that we are not allowed to object? Call someone out on rude or disrespectful behavior and you're likely to get an "Eff off" or worse. In a recent U.S. survey, 79 percent of adults said that lack of courtesy was a serious problem. For all of those fed up with anti-social behavior and suffering in silence, realize that you are the
i don't know Ti, one of xsboy's hockey team mates gets a lot of fouls, bc he cannot control his anger when he gets horked by an opposing player. i told xsboy if i could just smack the people that irritated me in my daily life, with impunity, my arms would be whirling like a dang windmill. : )
Lynne Truss has a new book?? Huzzah! She should be the patron Grammar Goddess of the WFTD thread.
I don't need to look at the thread.........I've seen those mug shots showing the ravages of meth. Very depressing.
It looks like a good educational tool to keep kids off drugs.....scared clean. Works for me.
I still have her first book on my list. Guess I am waiting for it to hit the discount shelves. This one sounds good. I just finished "You, the Owner's Manual". It was a good read, I kept it in my car and would read it while lunching out alone. It was good company.
Good point.
Hoping the thugs in France enjoy a carceral experience.
Home for the day, and maybe off tomorrow if one of my customers has to go to work instead of being home so I can measure her kitchen for new flooring-
The CIA has sprung another leak-
Or was it really the press?
Was it shared over a tidbit at lunch?
No, don't tell me-let me guess
Rather than another outing promoted
By a husband with a devious mind
This one has them conducting operations
Of a clandestine and carceral kind
And in Eastern Europe, no less
Evoking shades of Siberia without spring
If they're keeping terrorists snowbound
Those prisons can't be such a bad thing
SG, if I tried to locate and hide all the jingly toys at bedtime, I'd be up till 2-the pets have secret caches of them behind and under nearly every piece of furniture in the house, including the TV stand in the kitchen...
